Hi guys,

I had some driving lessons last year, and have been driving about with my mum. However over the past few months things have slowed down and I dont seem to have time for it. I can drive about ok, however my maneuvers leave a lot to be desired.

Do you guys have any tips about maneuvers to make them easier. And also how to make time for my driving.

Thanks

Yeah - practice :)

Find somewhere nice and quiet and just practice, practice some more and then practice for a bit. Make sure that what you are practicing is the correct way of doing things. don't start crossing your arms or not checking your mirrors correctly just because your instructor isn't with you.

Reversing round corners, clutch control on hills, parallel parking (don't use cars just practice the move) etc are all good to practice.

I found that industrial estates were a good bet at the weekends, the wide roads, lots or corners and junctions and roundabouts everywhere make them a good bet.

When I was learning I spent hours doing 7 and 9 point turns in my dad's (narrow) drive way. All you need to do it keep practicing the correct procedures to 'teach' your brain how to drive. once it knows what to do you stop having to think about it.

lol yeah i know that, but I mean what to line up e.g the kerb 1/2 way along the back window when reversing round a corner.

To be honest, I never rely on lining anything up. I just check the distance I have, and then make the maneuver (remembering of course to take into account what size of car I'm in....bit different going between my two cars!).

cool thanks, yeah I would like to find somewhere big and empty so I can just practise maneuvering. Any ideas apart from an industrial estate. Im in south london.

thanks

get the car about 60 cm away from the cerb just before the corner, look through the back window, the kerb is about in the middle, keep it there when reversing. After you suss it out you'll stop even thinking about it or conciously looking at the kerb ;)
