Learning Java as a first languaje

I have decided I would like to try and learn a programming language for the first time. I am thinking most probably Java, and maybe eventually looking at Android apps.

Can anyone reccomend any books or online resources for a total beginner? Ideally something easy to follow with examples to practice.

I did do computing in college about 7 years ago, so I am not totally ignorant to what programming is, but like an idiot spent all my time pratting about on the internet in classes instead of learning anything.

All help is appreciated!

I would recommend the Java head first book. It's pretty easy to read and its written by the guys that wrote the scjp certs book

Back in my day "Learn Java in 24 hours" was meant to be good. It doesnt mean learn it in a day though, just 24 individual one hour lessons.

+1, got their Java and Design Patterns books, uses simple examples and analogies to help you understand.

I have that book, I found Head First with Java to be more comprehensible.
