Hi all,

Just looking for advice as I've been tasked with helping implement a new learning management system (LMS) at work and was wondering if anyone has been involved in anything similar or has any suggestions. I've never been involved in any sort of procuring & implementing a new system/software before but am motivated to do well and get more exposure in the business as I'm currently working as an administrator so taking on new projects is good experience.

I've come in a few weeks after the project has started and it seems they've only chosen the supplier and that's about it which seems to be the wrong way to go to me? I would have thought the first thing to do is agree on the scope of what we want the system to be/do? Once that is agreed we can then look for a system/company that can accommodate our needs.

Is there a good framework or methodology for this sort of project?

A bit of background if it helps, I work for a manufacturer producing juice and the company currently uses an online learning portal and when an employee completes some training is input manually into an excel matrix which tracks all of the employees training (and when it expires) and from this they produce a site percentage of training such as compliance training which is part of the company's KPIs, which is also broken down into different areas of the business such as management etc. Depending on which area of the business the employee works in will depend on what mandatory compliance training they require, but every employee has to do manual handling & H&S at work and so on.

What I think their looking for is a system where an employee logs into an online portal, completes some training which is then automatically recorded, other than that I don't know yet if their specifically after anything else but its open to debate at the moment and I've already thought of a few other things which would be handy.

If anyone has any advice or suggestions it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I'd second Moodle as something to have a play with, it's fairly straight forward to setup and there's tons of resources/modules available to give it functionality for most needs.
Lots and lots of tutorials kicking around the Internet for it as well.

Edmodo is another one you could potentially look at, it's a sort of blend of LMS and social network. Though it's not as feature abundant as most other systems.

Both of those can be setup and used for free, or at the cost of hosting.
If your company has money to spend on it, then Absorb LMS or ComplianceWire are two really powerful tools that would be worth looking into. Both of those are immensely flexible and offer a large selection of features. (ComplianceWire can be quite pricey though as they assess the cost based on the businesses).

Thanks for the replies.

It seems they have already chosen Enable by Virtual College which is apparently rated highly and is the leader for the UK market. The team actually only consists of 2 people, the Training Manager and the Training Administrator and it doesn't seem like they've explored anything else or have any experience in this either and both are very busy dealing with the day to day stuff so looks like I'll be quite involved which is a good thing and they want the whole system in place by May.

A meeting is being setup with the provider for next week so guess I'll know more then.
