Lo all,

Well, i started a new job about a month ago, working nights in despatch for a medium sized food manufacturer.

However, the problem is that i am now a minority! :(

Only 8-12% of all the workers there at night (approx 130-150) are english, the rest are polish or other. In despatch there are approx 11 staff only 3 of us are english, and the other 2 arent worth speaking too :D

Ive decided that in order to get on with the job and actually start enjoying it is to learn polish, these lads speak English pretty well but at break time its only over polish so i spend 2 hours out of 12 sitting there bored stupid with no one to talk too.

Has anyone here learnt polish and can offer advice, or does anyone know any good places to look at language courses?

Thanks

Youve got the best method of learning right there in front of you...Your workmates...

Tell them you wanna learn polish and i bet they will be very excited to help..

What Baldy said, trust me if you show interest then they'll help you as much as they can (unless you're a moron like me that can't learn anything new).

Good luck with it Nutz :D

Dzien dobry (jen dob-ri - where 'i' sounds like it does in the word 'in') - good day
Czesc (chesh-ch) -hi
dzekuje (jen-coo-yeah) - thank you

I'm sure a few minutes after saying these to your work mates you'll have learnt a few swear words and you'll be on your way. I'd recommend the rough guides polish phrase book. Excellent for learning wee phrases and it has phonetics which is good at the start.

I've been learning properly since october 05 and casually for about 2 years before that.

Does exactly what it says on the tin!

I hope I wasn't the only person who read it like this! :p

I can speak a bit of Polish, I found trying to learn from a phrase book it was very difficult. The prounciation was wrong on most things, so I just asked my students to teach me.

thanks for the advice guys, ive had the lads at work teaching me a few things but you never really know if what they are telling you is actually what it means :D I have to take it all with a pinch of salt.

Ive seen it in the past where people have been told a foreign phrase that didnt mean what they though it meant :D

I'm wanting to learn Polish too...

haven't found anything really useful yet though, there are a few audio CDs but not sure how effective they are

i used to work for TNT before it burnt down with a lot of polish and iraqis. i learnt quite a bit of the language from them, they were actually happy that someone took an interest in their lifestlye and language

Yep go ahead and ask your workmates to teach you. Us poles are a nice bunch, although i did witness one huge pole smashing another weedy one in the face in the match vs ecuador for telling him to 'calm down'. Lol

Ive been speaking it all my life, and learned only from my grandparents, and aunts and uncles, but don't get to speak it much at uni.
