I started having lessons a few years ago but decided to stop at the time because I ended up in the city and didn't really need a car to get about. Now I wish to start again. The problem is in order to gain experience I want to be able to practice in my own time (i.e with my parents) and not the driving instructor but both cars of my parents are automatics (BMW x5 and Merc C class Coupe).

Now if I take my test in an automatic then I will only be allowed to drive automatic cars right? Is there any major disadvantages of this?

The other option I have is a 7 year old rover 25 (manual) but it is currently sitting on the drive decreasing in value. The next time I get to be able to drive it may be 5 months+ due to living elsewhere. Should I just sell the car, learn in an automatic and put the money from the sale towards my first car?

Thanks.

I would definitely learn in a manual, and I would also definitely learn with an instructor. Learning with parents is not a good idea imo. They aren't qualified and it can often just end up in shouting matches. Add to that they may be teaching you incorrect techniques and also that they don't know the test routes properly.

Nah, I don't mean just learning with parents. Will still be having 2 lessons / week with an instructor but to gain more experience on the road going for a few drives with them.
