Can anyone give me some recommendations on language software? My mum has moved to spain and would like to learn, I showed her resetta stone and she didn't like how it didn't show the english translations of the spanish phrases.

Any others you have experience with?

Dora the explorer.

I learnt all the Spanish I know from that program.

another vote for Michel Thomas, I am currently listening to his Italian CDs

Michael Thomas teaches you in a way where you can actually make up a sentance on your own.
Where other courses teach you parrot fashion for certain lines, Michael teaches you how to use the words and mix and match which is ideal so you know what exactly you are saying instead of being brainwashed into saying one line.

Highly recommended, after the first 2 CDs you will be suprised how much you have learnt.

The CDs have 2 beginner students with him, and you go along and learn with them.

Can I hijack this thread and ask for recommendations with French? I've had cause to use the French I do remember quite often of late and want to become more fluent :) Any votes for the Michel Thomas French?

I didn't like the way I was taught all those years ago in school, which was parrot fashion phrases, mostly. I'm pretty good with my grammar, so can form a coherent sentence, but want a boost to confidence and vocabulary, mainly :)

Michel Thomas is an excellent starting point. I would reccommend that you do the beginner's and advanced courses as quickly as possible. You will still not be brilliant but you will have a good base that you can build on. I would then reccommend that you get an Assimil course which is basically just 4CDs with dialogues on them and a seperate book with a transcription in both your target language and English, some notes on grammar points and some very basic exercises. Very simple but I find it to be one of the most effective courses out there and it is comparitvely cheap (about £50).

It should take about 6 months to complete both of those by which point you can consider yourself to be at an intermediate level and can probably start using native material a lot more (i.e. TV shows in your target language).

I would not recommend Rosetta Stone. It is hideously expensive for what it is and the last time I used it, it just seemed to be teaching single words and very short phrases with absolutly no explanations given. Also, as said before, it doesn't even show he English translation of what you are learning and just gives a picture which might be ambiguous. Pimsleur is good for developing a good accent in your language but it ridiculously slow paced and after 3 months, you will still have very little understanding of your chosen language and again, it is stupidly overpriced.

You say that your mother's already in Spain, the best way is simple immersion. Turn the tv on, buy a paper every few days, it's all at her fingertips already. That and a dictionary will help her shoot through.
Nice to see that people still make the effort, and don't just settle into anglicised communities, which annoys the natives no end and ruins the cultural aspect.

Learn the basics - you can buy a lot of GCSE type of books along with some audio exercises of your choice. Then you must spend some time in Spain! There's no other better way of learning a language. I spent several months working there, fortunately my French roots and the fact I had done Spanish GCSE (over a dozen years previous) did help, however the only way to do it is exposure to the culture and language and people.

I could have really done with some Spanish today.

Unfortunately "Hi, I'm calling from TNT Head Office in the UK - dondé este la import supervisor?" didn't get me very far; that's as much Spanish as I can realistically speak and it's not exactly accurate :D

I definitely need to learn some work lingo in foreign language. Unfortunately being able to say "Je m'apelle Leon, j'ai onze ans, j'abite en Brynamman en Pays De Galles" doesn't get me important parcels upgraded for the next day!
