Went to my girlfriend's parents yesterday and picked up her old Yamaha Saxaphone. It's a lovely piece of kit. It hasn't been used for 10 years and has a broken mouth piece, that I will replace, but I want to learn it and use the instrument to learn to read music.

Has anyone got any useful resources for working out the fingerings for playing? I'll probably organise a few lessons to get me going and then see how the funds go after that. But without knowing what note I'm playing - I play the guitar and that's easy to work out - I don't know where to start. :p

I don't play any instrument but I would imagine that learning the fingering isn't the hardest part about learning the sax. Just getting a consistent sound out of it could be tricky at first and it will probably take some time to develop your breathing.

Lessons sound like a good idea, though. Good luck with it!

I just recently bought a guitar and went looking for online tutorials and guides. I found one of the best resources is youtube, loads of lessons, how to play certain songs, all sorts on there. I can only assume it would be the same for saxamaphone (Although don't expect that search to return anything but simpson quotes :D)
