Got my first driving lesson today just wondering what I should know before going. Currently just looking at what all the pedals do. Aiming to learn as quickly as possible, preferably before summer ends *fingers crossed*

Running down chavs gives you extra points.

Oh and grab a Highway Code book from somewhere like WHSmiths and read a few pages whenever you get a chanc.

Read the highway code yet? And I'm sure there's nothing anyone on here will be able to tell you that your instructor wont.

You wont have any problems if you got a decent instructer
I started my lessons not long ago have never drove before but was driving about first day np

For me it was dont play computer games before a lesson. I did once for a few hours and my brain was completely out of it and I couldnt drive the car well at all. My instructor even said "have you beeen playing computer games?".

Read up on the highway code, there isn't much else you can do.

Driving with or learning from relatives/friends can be counter productive. The driving test is quite pedantic in the way they expect you to do things. You need to be learning from an instructor or you'll risk having to unlearn stuff.

It also might be worth conntacting the DSA and finding out what the lead time is for booking theory and practicle tests (although your instructor should have a good idea).

Try to get a recommendation for an instructor, don't commit to a large number of lessons till your happy with them. Bare in mind many of the large driving schools specialise in training new instructors. The independent guys tend to be more experienced.

If you are learning the very basics like which pedal does what, then you will feel a bit like learning to ride a bike for the first time ...... all happens automatically when you know how, but getting there can be daunting. DO NOT PANIC is my first piece of advice; keep your eyes on the road in front or in the mirror, so that you know what's going on around you and ALWAYS signal to let people (inc pedestrians) know what your intentions are.

I'm sure that you'll be in a dual control vehicle so your instructor should be able to assist you in an emergency.

Try to relax and enjoy.

Good luck.

Have a few lessons first. Read up on the Highway Code in-between these lessons and also read up on the basics of how a car works (I find that knowing how something works makes it a lot easier to operate ;)). Then after you have had a few lessons get you parents or a friend to take you out driving for about 1 hour every night. As a learner what you need is experience. Practice what you did in your lessons in these outings and ask advice from your instructor on any problems you encounter.

I followed these rules and passed my test in two and a half months with only one minor.

Good luck and have fun. :D

There's been countless amounts of these threads. You're paying the chap a small fortune to teach you, use him and see how it goes. It's absolutely useless asking here.

The no driving games before your first lesson is a good tip... I started lessons about a month ago, and because I was playing lots of GT5 : Prologue before hand, I kept looking down at the windscreen to see what gear I was in... d'oh!

But just relax, enjoy it and listen to your instructor.

personally, i'd go to an airfield or private road and get a friend/parent to teach me the first basics

ie..

gears
pedals
reversing

then after 20-30 mins of being able to move the car, I'd go for a lesson

it's sometimes easier to take instructions from someone you know, and then the instructor will quickly push you into shape :)

best of luck :)
