LEARNING TO PLAY POKER

I'd suggest downloading a poker app and using play money, or very low stakes (1p / 2p) etc to learn. You don't need to spend a lot (or anything).

Also, I presume you're talking about Texas Hold em variant. In which case you can play pot limit, or no limit. The "rolls royce" of poker is no limit texas hold em, where the stakes can be high, but as I say, with play money you'll pick it up no bother with no risk.

You can play for fun but I think this is one game, and like all gambling, it is more exciting when there is something on the line, even if it's 1p.

I haven't played it in years....but texas hold em is the one people play. You need to learn all the combinations first though, shouldn't take long.

There are various Texas Hold em variants i.e. Facebook apps without spending real money you can use and can make some good friends along the way but I recommend some caution as some of these seem to be designed with fudged algorithms to try and encourage people into playing the real money version and winning streaks, etc. might not represent what you'd experience using real money.

That reminds me, I must get the OCUK Poker League up and running sometime.

Also a game though you can have a lot of fun playing sociably without real money - and without trying to be too clever with it.

Get to know probability well and you'll have a distinct advantage.

You will have no advantage.

To gain advantage you must figure out the type of player, in terms of % hands played, %raise, % call, %re-raise.

For example, i am multi-tabling zoom/rush poker in my days, as such i see a player has re-raised a raise, that player has a % history to re-raise at 1%, and he only plays 10% of hands dealt.

Meanwhile, here is a guy who plays 60% of hands dealt, who has re-raised me, who does a re-raise 40% of the time.

Most poker sites have free tables to get you used to the game, but it is not a great way to learn as players go all-in at a drop of a hat. They also offer freerolls (well pokerstars used to) where you can enter for free and still win money. Once again players play high risk to start and then tighten later in tournament. They are good fun and move quickly but expect to have lots of bad beats.

Are you a complete beginner or understand ranks and other terms?

How is knowing probability of no advantage? It is distinctly useful in a game of poker and will give an advantage against most.

Playing for fun will not help you learn as people will play stupidly, start low stakes and work up

first decision is whether you are playing cash, multi table tournaments or single table tournaments (sit and go)

do not even think of playing any variants such as Omaha at his stage

There are Poker sets with fake chips so yes you can play Poker normally but without real money changing hands.

You can buy books on how to play or guides online I would imagine.

I've played a lot of poker in my time and the best way is live at a casino or tournament. Look for some poker clubs near you, Redtooth Pub Poker for example.

Online is a bit boring after a while and lacks the banter of the real world.

Where do I begin? I’m learning to play poker again,
Can't you see I've waited long enough?
Where do I begin?

Do you remember the cards we used to play?
I’m coming back, it’s not too late,
Tonight I'll sit back at the table.

I'm learning to bluff, learning to bet,
Seeing the tells, I won't forget,
I won't be folding anymore.

I believe I’ve got the hand to win,
Doing what it takes to rise again,
I’m learning to play poker again.

Running back to the game where I belong,
Held my cards, I've waited so long,
Now I see the flop, I know it’s right.

I'm learning to bluff, learning to bet,
Seeing the tells, I won't forget,
I won't be folding anymore.

I believe I’ve got the hand to win,
Doing what it takes to rise again,
I’m learning to play poker again.

I’m feeling the rush, the cards in my hands,
Counting my outs, I’m taking a stand,
The stakes are high, but I’m all in,
In the game of poker, I'm here to win.

I believe I’ve got the hand to win,
Doing what it takes to rise again,
I’m learning to play poker again.

Learning to play, it’s not the end,
I'll bluff and bet, and then I'll win,
I'm learning to play poker again.

While not quite the same as real world banter - I used to play Texas Hold em on Facebook with a few friends/people we'd regularly encounter on the same tables on voice comms was a good laugh.
