My Polestar 2 was registered on 23rd March 2021.

It's going back on 20th March next week.

Leaseplan say it must have a valid MOT to be collected.

The MOT is technically not due until 23rd, right? So it would fulfil this criteria?

Yep so long as they collect it before the MOT is due, you are fulfilling your side of the lease.

At work we have been caught out once or twice when the car for some strange reason was registered early, a good couple of weeks before being delivered so unless we wanted to send it back two weeks early, we have had to put an MOT on it

Your car doesn't require an MOT until it is 3 years old, so technically doesn't have one now, but the lease company are asking you to get an MOT done pre-handback so they can more easily remarket the car by simply listing it with no work involved, provided it's in good condition.

It does sound like they've made it a part of the lease agreement, so do check what the consequences are of not getting it done prior to hand back.

Pretty sure it doesn't work like that. If it was a 2 year lease then you're suggesting you'd need to get an MOT a year early?

The car leasing firm I work for operate on this basis, though we do a minimum 3 year lease.

If the car comes back with an MOT we usually have it advertised for sale within 3 days of hand back.

With no MOT it needs booking in, possibly waiting for parts if it fails on something etc.

Much easier for us if we make it a condition of the lease and the customer kindly organises the MOT prior to hand back.

In 20 years of leasing cars at work we have never got a car MOT unless it wasnt been collected until after the MOT ran out. Sometimes that meant the car was collected on the final day of the MOT expiry. Never had an issue with any lease company. The only requirement is that the car has a valid MOT on date of collection (usually cause they just send a driver to pick it up)
