Leasing your graphics card

I've been wondering why Nvidia and AMD don't offer a leasing service on their graphics cards or a similar system to mobile phones; you pay a rolling monthly cost to "own" the card and then at the end of the two year contract you're "encouraged" to trade it in as a deposit towards the next card and 2 year contract. It could include access to games to 'own' too like EA Access or whatever it is called.

It wouldn't be something for me but with the redonkulous prices for the RTX cards it might be tempting, and I'm sure Nvidia could squeeze a few more pennies out of people this way?

If your 2080ti is £1,200 normally, I could see people paying £30 to £40 a month for games access and a GPU. This is £1,400 to £1,920 over 2 years.

Would you go for it? How much would be prepared to spend a month for a GPU and access to the main AAA games?

As above, no and nothing. I am not stupid enough to pay £1200 for a gpu, be it outright or through monthly payments and I don't play these so called AAA games. Most are a rehash of a former game anyway with similar if not identical gameplay (Far Cry 2 onwards, Assassins Creed etc). If these ridiculous prices are becoming the norm then my current card will run until it can't keep up with the games I play (not going to happen for a good few years yet) when I will upgrade to a bargain second hand card. If I still can't get anything that is reasonably priced then it's time to ditch the pc.

No but if you have a spare million you could set one up yourself !

Not a chance. It'll just end up costing more overall, companies are not there for the benefit of the customer but to make money.

Leasing a whole PC would make more sense rather than just a piece of it but it's not something I would be interested in.

I don't get how people are happy to pay £50 a month for a mobile phone contract though either.

Pc leasing sounds a genius move

2/3yr lease gets you into the latest gaming pc rinse and repeat at the end of the lease

New market but I do think pc tech is slowing down in terms of advancement that 2/3 year old tech still has enough residual value to make leasing an option for companies now

So basically, the service Microsoft is rumoured to be offering soon....but the GPU is in a console. Can't see it ever working for PC but I'm pretty sure the console service will be well subscribed.

Isn’t the guy asking why THEY don’t do it, as in if it was me and I was NV I might think... hmmm I will make more money on this. It might not be of interest to the people on here but for the majority surely would generate some decent growth for NV.

Growth for these means increased feature support etc etc. It’s not as dumb as you may think, there are other finance options out there yes but does that mean NV etc don’t want more money direct?

There are plenty of companies that will lease you a complete PC but I couldn't find any that did just GPU's.
About £30 a month gets you reasonable machine with a 1080 or Vega 64 but that is £1080 over three years and you still don't own it at the end.
Unfortunately all the companies I have found would be considered competitor's so I cannot link them.

Given the prices and the way people run their finances I can see this becoming a thing. The kids don't have £2k for a PC but I bet they could find the monthly payment. Once enough people are doing it they'll all want to join their friends. Personally I'd rather own it outright.

And if the tech fails to take off, you lease another card? Leasing video cards... is the discussion really happening?

Nvidia already offer a GPU leasing offering via their cloud gaming service.
I ran a benchmark on street fighter through that service. It was a monster PC at the other end. The CPU was some mega expensive Xeon and the GPU wasn’t even a GTX card, it was some other £6k+ card. I don’t doubt I was sharing it with about 10 other users though.

It's the way of the world dude :). Why buy for cash what you can pay for over the long term and throw another 20%, 40% + of the cost away on it :p. Makes people feel better the payment is spread but at the end of the day lelasing GP's will likely cost more than buying them
Of course we all know leases are really just another more complex loan. I find it funny how folk wrap it up to sound better. Leasing cars is the funniest one IMO.
I don't see an issue with "failing to take off", they are, just GPU's at the end of the day.No different than leasing a car and then realising later you'd have preferred another one.
I hate the "finance everything" approach that is the norm these days. Unless it's an absolute necessity (maybe car, definitely house), most things should be bought with cash.

In some ways it's an interesting idea. But it's a relatively cheap luxury item - buy with cash or not at all.

Shush! Don't be giving Nvidia ideas or they'll be leasing 4k (in both resolution and price) cards to us once they have ensured most cannot afford to buy one.
