Hi guys. My steering wheel has a disease:

Can anything be done? It's just getting a bit worse with age (saying that the car is on 144k).

I added some leather conditioner to it (some Autoglym stuff, forgot it's full name) and if anything, it's made the rest of the wheel look better and that top bit worse! Not sure if it's because of the sun getting to it that it's gotten to that state lately... but alas, is it just something I'll have to live with unless I splashed out on a retrim?

Thanks :)

I have had some success with black dubbin from carr day & martin. My ex mrs used it to restore the colour on her leather horse riding boots, you should be able to get some from a saddler or country supplies store.

I will have a look into that kinda idea (colour restoring) as long as it doesn't come off all over my hands :D

£100 isn't bad at all for a retrim, would get a spare wheel to do that maybe, unless I can find a good nick one anyway of course.. didn't think of that!

Any recommendations of where I could send one to be retrimmed Fox?

It takes a while!. Clean it with warm water & let it dry naturally (overnight?). Then give it a good 1/2 hour buffing with ordinary black shoe polish. If she'll let you, knick a pair of ladyfriend's old tights to use as a polishing cloth. They don't absorb the polish & are about the best thing I've ever used for a polish rag.

Then give it a good half hour with the dubbin. It should look loads better, you wouldn't believe how good the ex's boots would shine up after weeks of poo & mud exposure! :D.
A steering wheel should be easy!

Glypton scuff master is what you need for that job, or a retrim better still :)

Fox, any experience or knowledge of good places to have a wheel retrimmed, mine could really do with it?
