Hi,

I'm running a transient CFD calculation. It'll take 10 or so hours to converge.

Is it okay to leave the laptop on overnight while it does its thing?

Thanks.

So long as the temperatures remain safe (you can monitor this with software like coretemp) and you have set the windows power settings so that it doesn't go to sleep then you shouldn't have any problems.

I would also suggest elavating the laptop from the desk (for example using two DVD cases at either side) to allow for airflow under the laptop.

u will be fine. just check ur power setting sso that the hdd etc doesnt shut itslef down after a certain time. left mine on to download and got up the next morking to find it on standby

I don't see why not, make sure it it is pugged in. It may be best to take out the battery to increase it life-span as running with both the battery and mains charger can damage the battery and decrease its lifespan.

Have left laptops on for weeeeeeeeeeks and they've been fine :p

But yeah take the battery out, I've killed my battery by using my laptop as a desktop replacement for 3 years. Now lasts 30mins MAX.

Yea nothing wrong with leaving it on. It's like a desktop, nothing wrong with it at all.

I would go by what Zefan has said though, do take out the battery and just have it running off the mains. Laptop batteries are temperamental things. They are just larger rechargeable batteries in real life and not designed to be kept on charged 24/7, plus they only have a limited amount of charges in them before they start to lose efficiency.

My old laptop battery from uni only lasted 6 months before I had to get PC World to replace it.

Technically it cant do any harm. I wouldnt run a laptop without a battery in it, some of them use the battery as a voltage regulator.

WHS. I've had a laptop before that had a specific warning to insert the battery prior to use of the system or it could be damaged without it. Think that was on my current laptop. Laptops are built to have the battery in place permanently.

The life of a laptop battery decreases when it's depleted and then recharged and especially when depleted by a huge % before being recharged. Running down to say 80% before recharging is much better than running down to say 20% and recharging each time.

Heat does decrease their lifepan but IMO the batteries that come with decent laptops are prettty good these days. I'm currently using a 3.5 year old Dell XPS 1330. With an SSD the 9 cell battery still has an estimated 5hrs+ use when I run from it. I have tried not to run the battery too low, something I did do with a previous laptop where the battery was down to 12mins usage only after a year or so.

I've used various notebooks without batteries in, never had an issue and it does help reduce wear and tear on the battery by not having it charging every time it's plugged into the mains.

Yupp i've had no issue with having no battery in just got to make sure you keep that cable way out of harms way since if it unplugs your gone. I currently have a ruined battery lasts about 10 minutes unplugged so I just keep it in so If the cable accidentally unplugs it wont just go on me.
