I don't think you can get the demo anymore I'm afraid.
This is cheap enough that you could just get it and not worry about it though

It's apparently free for the 360 too. Though I agree that the PC is the best choice
I never understood how people were still debating the purchase at full RRP. It's a masterpiece, and now it costs pocket change.

Slightly higher than HL2 but not a huge amount more.
edit: Playing online is actually less demanding than playing on your own PC - less AI for your cpu to handle.
