Left 4 dead connection issue

Almost everytime I try to connect to a verses match I get stuttering lag followed by "warning connection issues" before being disconnected, essentially rendering verses mode unplayable.

Now normally I can play campaign mode with a friend without trouble. my router is a dg834g v3 with the latest firmware.
