Left mouse button not working on fresh Windows 7 install

Hey all,

I'm reinstalling Windows 7 on a PC that I built for someone a few years back. They've been having trouble loading Windows, and I decided a fresh install was the best option, but, from the first installation window where you select the language etc I noticed the left mouse button wasn't working (so this started happening before the new install even started).

I thought whatever, the mouse must be dodgy, so I connected my own and it worked fine - the installation went okay from there. But as soon as Windows 7 finished installing and you get to the desktop for the first time, it started happening again, with either mouse, and only worked once when I was installing the network driver (after trying to master using only the keyboard). The right mouse button works if I right click the desktop fine, but doesn't do anything if I right click the task bar.

I managed to navigate to the mouse section in control panel, and everything seems to be okay there; ClickLock isn't active or anything daft like that, so I'm absolutely stumped as to why the left mouse button won't work properly - I've never had this happen ever before. The cursor moves with the mouse fine.

I've tried two different mice; every single USB port on the system; disconnected the keyboard just in case there was a sticky button, but nothing worked.

Am I missing something really simple here?

Asus P8Z77-V LX2 motherboard
Intel Core i5 3330
Gigabyte 7850OC
GEIL EVO 8gb DDR3
Corsair Force 3 120gb SSD
Corsair builder series CX500 V2

I'm thinking there's actually something wrong with the motherboard at this point...

I've updated the bios to the most recent version, 2501, from 2014, but the exact same problems exist.

There's auto, enabled, and disabled options for USB legacy and none of them make any difference whatsoever.

I've got a Windows 7 and 10 installer on memory sticks, and the same issue occurs for both; I start the installer, choose the language options, and the mouse stops working immediately after this. The mouse works fine in the bios.

I've changed the battery on the motherboard as the system clock was always wrong, but it still keeps losing the time. It's not a new battery but it should still work. I've also had a cpu fan error message one time when booting, but the fan did eventually spin up.

Anything else I can try?

Crazy issue mate. I think you're right about the motherboard though. Seems like some logic failure happening somewhere. How old is the mobo?

Just had a look at your component list. If you've had this since new then you've done alright out these components. If you don't want to upgrade/replace then the only thing I can suggest is check your mobo circuitry and components for damage and give it a clean. Some vrm's/capacitors may be performing badly.

I built it roughly 10 years ago for a friend, so I suppose it's had good innings.

I just don't understand why the mouse works fine in the bios, it's bizarre. I've connected my mouse again and managed to get a bit further so I chucked Windows 10 on there but couldn't update it because it knew the system clock wasn't right.

I will buy a new battery tomorrow just in case the batteries I had on hand are drained though. I'll check the board over and see if there's any sign of an issue.

Thanks

I thought I'd solved this issue but no, gremlins are still present!

I managed to get Windows 10 installed using my mouse, which suddenly decided to work with the PC. I loaded the drivers and made sure it was working fine, bought a digital licence, and tried the original mouse that refused to work and that mouse still wouldn't left click, so when I gave the PC back to them I asked them to buy a new mouse.

Today though they tried to boot the PC and they just got a message saying 'connect boot device'. The motherboard splash screen logo is fine, but any attempt to get into the BIOS turns the screen into a garbled mess. It's like the screen is blank, but when you move the mouse, the cursor sort of 'uncovers' the words underneath in a series of blocks. I've never seen anything like this.

I tested the RAM with Memtest before I installed Windows 10, with no errors reported, and I checked the hard drives with Crystal disk info, which said both were ok.

Could it be the GPU, though I'd expect the screen to be messed up from the moment the PC is turned on?

I've cleared the BIOS but that didn't help at all.

Thanks

I've connected the PC to my telly and the image is absolutely fine, even when going into the BIOS.

It doesn't boot though - I get a message along the lines of 'the current bios setting does not fully support the boot device', then it goes onto mention adjusting CSM settings to enable the boot device.

I pulled the hard drive and put it in my system and it's not being detected, even in disk management, so I think it might have gone to hard drive heaven.

I've since installed a different SSD into the PC and installed Windows 10 and it's (touch wood) running flawlessly.

It had a fair amount of dust inside when I first looked at it, so I stripped it down and gave it a good clean. Incidentally, the mouse IS faulty as I connected it to my PC and the left click didn't work properly, so I'm hoping the issues have now been resolved.

Left button is usually(most used) the first to go on a mouse, last two went that way, they'd work if clicked just right, but were for the most part - end of life.

You can flip left/right click in Windows(i'll let you google it - ie. left handed / inverted mode), if the normal click is now functional with the right button you know it's the mouse.
