One of my friends took his life last night, he moved down to Ipswich late last year. No idea why he's done it yet but his uncle is on his way down there (from scotland) to try and bring him home. Does anyone know if we'll be able to do this quickly or are there any legal things that have to take place before the body can be released? we just want to get things sorted out ASAP.

Sorry to hear about that.

Quick Google shows this:

Unlike a natural death, when someone commits suicide the police will be involved and there will be an inquest into the death. 'The Work of the Coroner,' published by the Home Office explains the work of the Coroner and what happens at an inquest. It is available free of charge from the Home Office on: 0207 273 3776.

Maybe they could advise?

I would imagine the police etc will not be likely to release the body immediately as they will want to ensure that there are no suspicious circumstances etc.
How long it will take is pure guesswork and completely dependent upon what the Police think occurred.

Sorry to hear the bad news

AFAIK if a death if unexpected ( as this is ) then they will not usually release the body until after a post mortem ( not sure if it has to be after the inquest )

The police could also block release if they consider anything to be suspicious

I am no expert on the subject but it is something along these lines

First and foremost, my condolences.

My mum comitted suicide 4 years ago. There was a PM, however it was performed pretty quickly and the body then released, the funeral was 8 days after she died. It does depend a bit on how quickly cause of death can be determined. The coroners inquest will probably be around 6 to 9 months after, I warn you now that the press will be able to sit in on proceedings and will invariably get the story wrong
