Parents car was written off, have been dealing with the insurers to get the car sorted the guy has only just came into the office apparently and we have signed all relevant forms and they are going to pay xxx for my parents car, its now the 5th of june they are still paying insurance on a car they cant drive as its written off, theyll be +1 more ncb if they stay till the 7th when there insurance is up, if the company does not come to collect it before our insurance ends and its after the 7th legality wise where do my parents stand on the car not being insured its not moved since the crash due to someone hitting it outside of our house. Thanks in advance

With a write-off one of the things you send to the insurance company is the V5 giving them the ownership of the wreck

I don't think you get that years ncb if you have made a claim, I think it just stays the same as it was if it's protected obviously i.e. if you had 4 years ncb last year and protected your ncb then you will still have four years on the 7th.

I could be wrong but when I made a claim my renewal came without the extra years ncb.

I have made no claim on my insurace the car was parked and my father tracked down the culprit, the insurers contacted him he owned up to and all claims are coming off his insurance.

I would guess and I mean only a guess that your parents would be breaking the law if its parked on the road without insurance regardless of it being written off or not.

Can you move it so its off the road? Then when the company pick up the car they will be covered to drive it or it will go on the back of a truck.

Either way you won't need to get insurance for it.

Absolutely nowhere i can think of apart from maybe abit of green in the middle of our culdesack(sp) pretty sure there not to bothered as very limited traffic here anyway.

Fairly sure it's illegal to keep an uninsured car on the road, however if the car has been written off then surely it doesn't belong to you any more, so it's their problem now.

Send off the logbook if you haven't already. Not your car, not your problem.

If you're still concerned, dayinsure.com and their ilk would be the way to go.

uninsured cars can be left on the road actually... as long as it has tax (and mot i assume) its ok :)

Doesn't even need an MOT. As long as it's taxed you can park on the road. Think some people without driveways or garages have to park on the road, so as long as the car is taxed it can be without an MOT or insurance (providing it's not driven ofcourse).

Hence the "fairly sure" bit. Not absolute. The rest of my point still stands though. If you accept the write off then post them your logbook and it's no-longer your car or your problem.

So if it's ok to park on the road uninsured, what happens if, say, the handbrake cable snaps causing the car to roll down the hill into someone else's car?
