If you’ve found your way into this blog, you should be interested in what the game is all about. Legend of Grimrock is a fantasy game loaded with underground adventuring, tricky puzzles, combat and role-playing elements. In other words, it’s a dungeon crawl game.

It’s a genre that a lot of people consider old fashioned since nowadays there are huge open world RPGs filled to the brim with stuff like customizable horses, several-hundred-page scripts for subplots alone and, uh, talking dragons or spaceships I think. But we feel that some of the simple charms of dungeon crawl games have been forgotten and for no good reason too. To many, it might feel silly to make a 3D game in this day and age that constrains itself to grid based movement and environments but it actually works rather nicely when you think of combat as a game of tactics and timing. It works very well when designing puzzles too, which is an element we feel is very lacking, and in some cases completely absent, in modern RPGs. And, possibly most importantly, it also makes it possible for a small team of four developers to make a rather sizeable game!

Obviously it won’t have the same mainstream appeal as many big budget RPGs, but when you don’t have too much money you can afford to make niche games. And I’m not even joking! It’s pretty darn expensive to compete with the industry giants in their own game (ha!), so why not play the game by your own rules? That being said, we do hope that we can attract some players new to the genre too. After all it is a nice genre. It’s just that its fans have not been treated very well in the past, uhh, ten years or so… But we are doing our best to ease their plight!

So. Legend of Grimrock is a dungeon crawl game. It will be influenced by oldschool games of the genre but it won’t be a game that would have been possible to make fifteen years ago. It will look great, have loads of atmosphere, sound good and play well. We won’t be making many promises during the development since things will often change down the line, but those aforementioned parameters I can pretty much guarantee. And lastly, we’re hoping on bringing this game for iOS, PC and Mac and possibly some other platforms as well.

Hi Jani! Movement and turning is tile based but we are experimenting with free look which is useful when picking up items from the floor, looking into pits, etc. This is still a bit experimental but seems to work well.
It’s our own engine.
Navigation is pretty easy and comfortable with PC using mouse and WASD. Tablet/touchscreen is in future plans.
There’s only a couple weeks (six or so) of active development behind us at the moment but we have the full intent of releasing this pretty quickly, within the next few months.
The default inventory and gear tab only shows the stats that are most frequently needed or that are useful to know when deciding what the character should equip but there’s also a separate tab for more detailed info on the characters. Currently we have four stats there + some stuff related to leveling but that whole portion of the game is still in a rather primitive state so it’s still possible that those will change. Since you have up to four characters to take care of, we are trying to strike a good balance between depth and manageability.
:D:D

1. will the game be real-time or turn based? DM was real-time, but the current gaming industry lacks are turn-based games. Please at least add a toggle RT/turn, like in M&M6-9.
2. Game mechanics. d20 or derivative or your own? Simple or complicated (I hope for the latter)?
3. will the creatures be animated or static?

1. The current plan is for real-time only, sorry. There’s a couple turn based dungeon crawl games that are worth a try: Doom RPG, Wolfenstein RPG, Undercroft and Orcs&Elves pop to mind. Although all of them are on mobile platforms, I think.
2. Our own system. The complexity question is a little difficult to answer at this point (since the parts of the system are still under construction) but I don’t think the system could be labeled as “casual” if that’s what worries you.
3. Animated

I LOVE INDIE DEVELOPERS.

Nevermind having their fingers on the pulse of what gamers want, they have their finger up my *** pressing against my g-spot.

Just hope they get the level design right. The real charm of dungeon master was how well the levels were done, the traps, the hidden areas and pits. Nothing like getting dropped back into the oubliette when you were certain you'd left it far behind.

Pure oldschool dungeon exploration, mindblowing puzzles and intense atmosphere in the spirit of classics like Dungeon Master, Eye of the Beholder, Ultima Underworld and Arx Fatalis. These games were our favorites when we were kids and to me Dungeon Master is still one of the best games ever made. So our goal is to transfer the spirit of these old masterpieces and combine them with today’s technologies, gameplay innovations and graphics to bring them to this day.

ahhhhh

That and the magic system, that was truely awesome, and has never been equalled. DM and CSB are my 2 favourite games ever.
