Thierry Henry: Former Arsenal and France striker retires

Former Arsenal and France striker Thierry Henry has announced his retirement from football after a trophy-laden 20-year career to take up a media role.

The 1998 World Cup winner, 37, left New York Red Bulls this month but there was speculation he might choose to play on at another club.

"It has been an incredible journey," he said.

Henry is joining Sky Sports after being a World Cup pundit for the BBC.

The Frenchman, who also played for Juventus, Barcelona and Monaco, scored 175 Premier League goals and is fourth on the list of all-time scorers.

Henry won two Premier League titles and three FA Cups with the Gunners, where he played between 1999 and 2007.

He added the Champions League with Barcelona in 2009 and returned to Arsenal for four matches on loan from the Red Bulls in 2012, coming on as a substitute to score the winner against Leeds in the third round of the FA Cup.

When asked if he had considered another stint at the Emirates, he told Sky Sports: "You kind of never leave Arsenal...how many comebacks do you make? At one point it will turn out to be a bad move. We all love the first Rocky but I'm not too sure about the last one."

Henry made his Monaco debut in 1994 and he helped the club to the French Ligue 1 title in 1997.

"I would like to thank all the fans, team-mates and individuals involved with AS Monaco, Juventus, Arsenal FC, FC Barcelona, the New York Red Bulls and of course the French national team that have made my time in the game so special," he said.

"I have had some amazing memories (mostly good!) and a wonderful experience.

"I hope you have enjoyed watching as much as I have enjoyed taking part.

"See you on the other side.."

I liked this part

:D

Amazing player, was glad to see the back of him at Arsenal tbh..... as I love him as a player so much it would have been a massive shame for him to miss out on winning other leagues and the champions league :p

He was successful in his time with Arsenal, scoring some brilliant goals, setting up brilliant goals, being ridiculously entertaining and generally being just a really good bloke which is nice to see from a successful player. Had he been at Arsenal since then he'd have been great but not achieved a lot which he would have regretted and as a huge fan of his I would have been sad to see. I do wish he hadn't gone to the MLS as early as he did, a by product of the Barca/Real juggernaut is great players are often moved on after only a few years for another big name signing for the sake of a big name signing. I can see a player in his position maybe wouldn't want to take a step down to a lower level team but I'd have loved to see him for a few more years in a league I could more realistically watch.

One of my favourite players of all time, I'd like to see him take up some kind of coaching role at Arsenal if he's any good at it/has any interest in it.

An Arsenal legend, hopefully to return to the clud and lead us to glory.

inB4 anyone mentions the world cup cheating thing.

When that is the height of his cheating it shows what type of player he was. A couple of ridiculous(as in should never have been given) red cards with the Bulls, he got one red with Arsenal and one with France, the latter being fair(by today's rules at least) the former I can't remember or find a video of.

If it turns out he takes to management I'd love for him to do so at Arsenal in the future, he has the winning mentality required and was a good leader for the team. Maybe a position along the lines of Vieira/Zidane to get him into the system, learning the ropes, helping to teach youth teams/reserves and building up from there while also helping with things like scouting and persuading players to sign with Arsenal, youngsters and first team players. But I think it would be key that he learns in such a role under someone other than Wenger.

That incident is probably the last thing I think about given everything he's achieved and the performances put in along the way. Was it really THAT big a deal?

Still remember this one!

Proper legend. Hope he does take up some kind of role at Arsenal eventually.

A great player but when I think of Henry that's the first thing that comes into my mind.

Really ?? Wow

Exactly and thats coming from a UTD Fan as well. Top draw professional and played good football. One of them players you would pay to watch

Yeah well we all have our opinions, I remember it being pretty big at the time, and what it meant, and what was never done about it.

Just another shining example of the lack of qualities/moralities/integrity in the supposed beautiful game. But we can all forget about it 'cos he scored some good goals!

It's like Rivaldo and that play acting incident, great player but again prepared to cheat in order to win.

Not much to dislike about him, one pretty bad thing that anyone would want their own player to do.

Unbelievable talent, more enjoyable at Barca

Well people can defend it as much as they like but it'll never be anything other than cheating in my book.

I also don't think it's hard to comprehend that some people may think of that incident when the name Henry is mentioned to them, there's probably a few in Irelend for starters, not so many in France I'd have thought though :p

You can't say that anyone would want their own player to do it, you may want your player to do it, but accept that others may not.

Best player i have watched in the Premier League, he literally had everything was such a complete player.

Like someone mentioned above he is one of those player i would pay to watch, dont think their was a weakness in his game.

Amazing player, but let's have it right that handball was pure filth.

Was worth it just to get Roy Keanes reaction in his press conference mind.

An absolute joy to watch. Get sick of seeing his goals against Newcastle on highlight reels though :(
