Lego LOTR - how to drop an item?

Just a quick question, my girlfriend 's dad is playing this game but has come to a point where he has to wear a disguise and has accidentally picked up both orc helmet's with one character and it seems like he can't drop one for the other character to pick up...

Any one know how to get past this?
