Leica D-LUX 3

My dad has the Panasonic LX-2. Exact same camera. Sensor shape is 16:9, so you only get the widest 28mm focal length when shooting at that aspect ratio. Really nice camera. My dad has met a few people with the D-Lux 3 and had them side by side, and said they are the same camera.

For what it's worth; I also recently purchased a Panasonic compact camera to go alongside my current DSLR. I have the FX100, and since I've had it I have been blown away by the quality of pictures and the ruggedness of the construction.

Panasonic LX2 for the win, it's so cheap now too.

I have the panasonic lx1 and bought it just as the lx2 and lieca equivelent came out.

from all the research I did at the time it seemed as thought there was very little difference between any of them. the later models have a bigger lcd screen and slightly different processing on the jpg's.

the differences between the panasonic and lieca models appeared to be in the processing of the RAW to jpg. As such I saw no real need for the Lieca model, and bought the LX1. The lx2 was nicer, but was 150 quid more at the time.

I am actually looking for another hi end compact for the wife, and still can't really find anything much better than these. the only down side is that they are a bit noisy at even moderate ISO, so you really need to shoot RAW and process it out.

conclusion. the lieca is too expensive considering that they same camera is available without the badge for a lot less. buy the panasonic version if you choice has come down to these...

Looking at the G9 now, is therea new version off this camera coming out soon, as I dont want to buy it and a better version coems out bringing all the prices down?

the G9 is the newest camera in this model range, and has not been out long. It will be at least 12 months before this model is updated..

Another vote for the Panasonic LX2, I've had mine for over a year now, and for sheer functionality and portability, I cant fault it. As Aztech says, the noise is an issue, but as long as youve got a decent size SD card (2gb+) in it, shoot raw, and youre sorted. Really good build quality too - if you can pick one up cheap these days, I'd say they are definately worth checking out. 16:9 rocks for composition, too :)

A friend has a D-Lux 3 and loves it at iso 100 + 200, anything above and noise becomes an issue.

Strangely there is more noise in RAW than in jpeg - it must have some inbuilt noise filter that works very well when making jpegs !

Is the LX2 the same, same processor etc ?

edit - his is the digi-lux 3 !!!

Something you might find interesting. Panasonic now make the internal sensor and the electronics for the Leica digital cameras and Leica produce the optics on the Panasonic digital cameras. Something to bear thought on when looking at prices what with Leica being a lot more expensive than Panasonic.

I've had my lx2 for about 9 months now, and paired with a 8gb sdhc card and a few spare batteries its a great little thing, the only real issue Issue I've had is that its not that good in low light level situations. The flash will fix the situation for the most part, but when you can't use the flash it can be a little annoying. Also the zoom is very limited at I think 4x.

I thought this has always been the case?
