Length of service

Out of interest do regret staying in your first graduate job so long? (do you feel you otherwise could have increased salary quicker? )
What field you in? IT I'm guessing?

I work in mobile software development.

Software development is the kind of field where someone with three years experience in a certain technology is considered senior (rightly or wrongly). If all you care about is money then there's no point staying in your graduate job beyond the first three years.

I could have moved sooner but mobile only started to explode when the iPhone was released in 2007. There weren't very many mobile jobs before then so I would have had to have moved fields to find a job. A lot of the graduates who left before me went into banking and I have zero interest in that.

So, no, I have few regrets but for very industry-specific reasons.

An important point is that changing your job/role isn't necessarily the same as changing company. You need to find the right company.

I've been with my current company for 8 years, but haven't had the same role for more than 2 consecutive years. The roles are varied as are the projects I've worked on, the company is very keen on diversification and that's only going to keep gathering momentum.

Largest payrises (in terms of both absolute and percentage) have been with my current employer.

Downside is that I do work reasonably long hours, and it's a bit of an effort at times to keep learning and re-learning new business areas and new technologies.

Hats off to those who stay in a job for any length of time! I've averaged around 12 months in any job i've had. I work in tech so the opportunities are there but i climbed the career ladder pretty fast with the ultimate goal of getting out on my own which I've now done.

Or working from home.

True, but there are t that many jobs/companies that would tolerate one of their employees working from home full time and pretty much never coming into the office because they are hundreds of miles away. :p

We're in the very fortunate position where that is exactly what happens. She drives 140 miles probably once every quarter for a meeting/training. We're considering the possibility of a Cyprus or even US posting for me as she has that flexibility. Compounded with the good earnings and it's another reason why my early retirement is likely... She can be the bread winner if she likes :p

20 years next month.

Very happy where I am, small manufacturing site that's part of a multi-national. Run the quality system and any other IT applications they need (ERP and non-ERP).

I'll be here for another 20 at least. I like my colleagues.

11 Year now for the place I am in currently, Basically the 3rd Job I have ever had,

Unfortunatly not really moved up, but moved sideways quite abit, wage is not great but its allowed me to have my own home.

I'd love to move to a different company, but I worry about the opportunites or if there are any. Basically just doing reporting for banks - I enjoy it, but I'd like more

I've been with current employer just over 5 years and that is the longest I've ever been with one company. Prior to that it was 4.5 years and 3 years respectively.

Current employer has gone down hill and with no chance of promotion I am looking for something better. Will jump ship tomorrow if something came along.
