I'm not an authority on laptops by any means. But, i'm looking to buy one as i need a safety net should my desktop machine go down and i have urgent development work i need to do, for going to presentations with clients and for backing up my main.

I can get this Competitor link for £660 delivered including VAT due to a friend of a friend working for IBM.

Does anybody have any thoughts on this make or know of anywhere i could go to actually see and touch one in the flesh?

To Mods: Sorry if this is regarded as a competitor. If so, please delete. Figured that maybe it wouldn't be because of the make and type of deal.

I've not tried this model but in the past I have used lots of IBM Thinkpads and for me build quality wise IBM laptops are the best I've used.

Also someone who repairs hardware for big commercial clients told me that he had the least hardware faults with the IBM laptops so I would recommend them.

i have an x41... and its been through a car crash with only minor bending to the base causing it to wobble when i type... however i bent it back into shape when i get cheesed off with it one day. Its solid as a rock. Unfortunately my hard drive broke (like mechanically) the other day... but i really throw my laptop about. I agree that the build quality is excellent.

oh... and trackpoint... it owns touchpad and everyone knows it :p

I'm on a Thinkpad T41 as we speak. It's my only means of a computer whilst my deskop is being mutilated :D.

I cannot fault IBM for their build quality, ease of expansion etc (easy to take apart as it is so well constructed), and their warranty.

I had a problem with my keyboard - Thursday 12:05pm phoned them up. They said they would call me back by 5:00pm. I received no call so was a bit . Woke up next day and had a courier knocking on my door at 11am. It was a package with a new keyboard in which had come from Holland no less in less than 24hrs.

Trackpoint smackpoint - I love my touchpad :D. Though sometimes I do find myself using the trackpoint.

If Thinkpads ran OSX properly, I'd be back with one like a shot. My first ever lappy- The Thinkpad 560 (P133, 2gb HDD 24mb RAM etc) is one that I'd still go back to if it ran the stuff I wanted. Admittedly it only had a 12" screen, but other than that, the keyboard was the best laptop variant I've ever come across, and I want a trackpoint back :(
Awesome little machine, & it still gets used occasionally when I need something ultraportable.

Hello mate,

I agree as well, although i don't have an IBM at the moment i have had them in the past and they are great machines.

The Lenovo Thinkpad Z60m 1.8g 2mb 512 does look an old model IMO as it uses an old centrino processor, might be worth looking around for the dual core models which i presume they must have bought out?

Does look a nice laptop though none the less :)

I still rate my old Thinkpad X23 as one of the best machines I've ever used. I love Thinkpads.
