I keep hearing about this manufacturer, and most of it all good. I guess I know little about them as they're not available in your usual high street stores.

So - what's the score? Decent brand? Quality looks good from what I've seen online, and prices seem sensible too.

Just been looking at a G570 Sandybridge i5 BTW.

They used to be the PC arm of IBM. I've got a few at work, we've only had one fail and it had had a cup of tea poured into it. Can't comment to the support because I've not had to use it.

I'd say they are worse then average for preinstalled crap.

The last batch we bought were some SL510s, I really quite like them. I even like the looks, which I suspect most people would find dated.

I got a G555 last year which is their budget end and it has done 12 months ok so far, nice keyboard layout inc numeric pad, decent battery life, great screen and build and up to 4 hour battery life with very conservative use. For £300 new it was a bargain and feels much better built than other manufacturer cheapies / budgets or even some higher end home laptops like the HPs and Acers. There is no screen or keyboard flex either.

Been used every day for up to 16+ hours per day. The only down side is the track pad which on occasion can have a life of its own but you can at least disable it.

I imagine their more corporate ones like the SL are even better,

+ much like blackberry users, its branding is still corporate enough to give the impression you’re there to work and mean business.

So you've used it for 365 days at 126 hours a day? I doubt it. :p

Bearing in mind I know this laptop, it doesn't compare build wise to any of the high end or even low end HPs. Acers, yes, but they've always been questionable, especially at your price point. Take the Compaq / HP 610 series for instance which is marginally more expensive but of much better build quality and reliability. I literally know of 5 of these laptops which have been on everyday for all day since bought, over a year ago.

The G series HP are built like toffee and the DV3/DV6 feel plasticy but better. HP corporate stuff is nuke proof though.

The Compaq / HP stuff is much better than the typical home lappys indeed.

A folded piece of paper has less flex than some of the budget emachine acers :p:D

About 600 Lenovo machines at my site, about half and half laptops/desktops. Lenovo engineer has been in 4 times in the last six months, three of those for customer induced damage.

I've just retired my lenovo after battering it for 3+ years.... and I mean battering it. Dropped it down the stairs, off tables, kicked out of bed, into sand on the beach etc....

The only time I've ever had to have it repaired was when I spilled a drink into it.

Not the nicest looking but as reliable and solid a laptop as I've ever used.
