Lenovo X1 Backlight Bleed

Hi all,

I was debating whether to put this in the monitors section, but thought I might start here first. I recently picked up a new Lenovo X1 and I'm not sure what to think of the screen.

Originally, I went for a version with a cheaper, non-touch IPS screen. When it arrived, the screen had some bad uniformity issues, backlight bleed, and what I can only describe as a strong yellow tint. After reading a few of the Lenovo forum posts, it seems that these issues are quite common with the particular LG panel Lenovo are using. Everything else about the laptop was great, but I couldn't put up with the screen and sent it back.

After returning, I 'upgraded' to the touch screen version of the same laptop, which used a different panel (AU Optronics). I received the new laptop yesterday, and the colours are much better. However, there are still some backlight bleed / uniformity issue - see picture below.

This was taken with a phone and as a result everything is over exaggerated - in reality, the issues are nowhere near as visible. However, the 'spotlight' effect in the top left and bottom right of the screen is somewhat noticeable on dark backgrounds when the brightness is moderate-high. I'm not sure if this will be an issue normally, but I would have expected better from a premium product; my old Dell desktop monitor (2407WFP) is nowhere near this bad.

Is this level of back light bleed normal on laptops? Would you send it back?

Im sorry to say i think its a lenovo wide issue. This was a new, 3k res, t540p screen I got them to replace because of backlight bleed.

This fixed the flare in the upper right hand quadrants that was particularly annoying, but it was still bleedy-determined-by-viewing-angle.

I was however relatively impressed by lenovo (ibm) warrant support. They sent out an engineer to replace the screen, on site, within a week.

Are you fairly nimble fingered and feeling brave? I can pretty much guarantee if you remove the bezel the vast majority of your problem will go away. the odd spots that appear away from the corners are mainly caused by the bezel "pinching" the panel. I had a similar issue with my GT72 and after some careful removing and refitting it's all gone.

You may still notice some tint from the lower corners at high brightness levels on solid black screens but it should be fairly uniform and pretty much non existent when brightness is set at a level that does not blind you when looking at google.
