Hi,

I'm Heading out to sri lanka for a wedding and I was wondering which lens would be perfect for taking pictures?

I'll mostly be taking pictures of my friends, scenery and landscapes?

If you don't mind buying 2nd hand and you have the spare money, you'll probably (depending on duration and no. of lenses) save money buying 2nd hand and selling on again (or keeping if you like it), rather than hiring.

Depends on budget? EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 ?

+1 this is a great general purpose lens and a huge step up in image quality from the kit lens.
Plus it's got a pretty wide aperture meaning it will be fast if the wedding is indoors and you aren't allowed to use flash.

Yea, what about talking scenery and portraits ?

I use it for landscapes all the time and very pleased with it. It's very sharp and the image quality is great.
For portraits, while not having as wide an aperture as a dedicated portrait lens, it has an aperture of f/2.8 at all focal lengths, which is as wide as it gets for zoom lenses and it creates a really nice background blur.

Yup, 17-55 on a crop is pretty perfect. Effective focal view at the long end is good enough for portraits. At the wide end, great for scenery. Decent aperture as well for shooting portraits and the wedding

For portraits I love my canon 50mm f/1.4 on my 550d, pin sharp. I am considering getting a 17-50/55 f/2.8 as well for more general purpose but will probably go the Tamron non VC or Sigma route (Canon is a lot more £££). If you went the same way it would be well in your budget.

example 50mm shot.
