Lens hire for sports photography

Morning all. I have been the owner of a Nikon d5100 for several weeks now. I bought it with the 18-105VR kit lens and I am slowly getting some decent results. In June I am going to BTCC at Croft and in July to olivers mount scarborough for the bike racing and was thinking of hiring a lens with a larger zoom on it to see how I get on before I commit to buying anything.

I was thinking something in the region of 70-200 or 70-300 ? but suggestions/experiences would be most welcome.

tempting! Quite fancy a 400mm F2.8L with a 2x extender but I'd never want to give it back
