It may seem silly when spending £500 on a lens, but why do I still feel cheated spending £30 on a lens hood that costs a few quid to make?

What do you guys prefer, official Canon/Nikon hoods or do you always opt for replacements at over 50% less money?

I'd rather spend less and grab an extra filter...

Just grabbed a JJC replacement hood for my 10-22mm, anyone rate them? Reviews seem good, just as good as the official.

All my lenses have come with lens hoods (Nikon) and have never lost one.

The hood for my 16-85 broke pretty quikcly and is farily feable, which is strange because the lens is otherwise well made with metal barrel, metal mount, weather sealing, high grade plastics.

I bought my hoods for a pound or two from eBay. To be honest I notice minimal to no difference in contrast/saturation from using a hood so the main reason I use one is to prevent the glass being accidentally touched / knocked (especially when my camera is on my black rapid strap). None of them have broken yet so unless any of my future lens purchases come with hoods I am going to continue using cheap lens hoods.

when is the best time to use a hood,is it something that comes with experience,i haven't got a clue other than I guess its something to use if there is a lot of sun?
thanks

As Raymond say, the lens hood should always be on. the only time it comes off is by necessity for graduated ND filters etc.

so far the only lens i have that didnt come with one was the kit lens i got with the D5100
my other 3 lens all came with them
but i sure as hell wouldnt pay £30 for a bit of plastic
but as said ebay has them cheaper
