Lens question

Hi all,

It's been a while since I ventured into this corner of the forums. Alas my camera hasn't been used a great deal recently. However, I'm feeling inspired, and want to get back to taking pictures!

I'd like to find a replacement for my 400D's tacky kit lens. What are peoples' opinions on the Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4.5 (non-OS)? Reviews seem good, and it is about right budget-wise (although it seems to be a pain finding anywhere selling it). It'd also be nice to gain the 55-70mm extension over the kit.

So, good buy? Try something else?

I'm a big fan of the current f2.8-4 OS model. I doubt there are many of the f2.8-4.5s around now as the new one has been out for over a year.

I heard the optics suffered a bit in the revision process, so am a little hesistant about the new one. Not totally sure I need OS, but could probably be swayed!
