My dad is going out there on business now- is it worth getting him to bring back a lens or two (got a 350d).

Thinking a 28-105 and maybe 70-300 if the prices are right. Anyone got recommendations?

Cheers.

Hong Kong prices:
EF 28-105: ~HKD 1850 (~GBP 130)
EF 70-300 IS: ~HKD 5500 (~GBP 385)
EF 70-200L f/4: ~HKD 5300 (~GBP 370)

I'd say it's definitely worthwhile for some of the more expensive lenses, but without looking at the cheapest UK prices I'm not sure whether the cheaper lenses like 28-105 would be worth the hassle.

Having said that, if your dad is going to HK and has time to shop around for lenses, you don't have to worry about delivery charges or taxes so it's really quite convenient anyway.

Those prices are quite close to cheap UK based sellers. During the last year or so the savings from buying from HK have dropped.

Hmn i was about to post almost the exact same thread..

I'm off to Bangkok in about 4 days (currently in Sydney!) and am completely smitten with my friends 70-300 he got in a deal with a 350d. I've got a d50 with only the kit lens and a zoom looks like a decent next buy (we were at the zoo today and it was damn frustrating!). Besides the obvious question about price differences there -- if i see a Nikkor lens in Bangkok, is it going to be a Nikkor lens? Are there fakes i should be wary of?

(I was looking at lenses today in Sydney and could get a 70-300 Nikkor 'G' for 113gbp -- any good? )

I refer the honourable gentlemen to a thread I created a couple of days ago. :)

Those prices are direct from Nikon in Thailand. You may not be able to read Thai but you can verify those prices by visiting www.nikon.co.th. Take your passport wth you to the shop, so you can fill in the VAT Refund form when you make your purchase. You can then claim 7% back when you leave the country (you must do this at the customs office before you check in your luggage!!!).

If you email them using the email address on the contacts page they normally reply within 24 hours and will quote you prices.

If you're not familiar with Bangkok but you know where you are staying, post the hotel on this thread and I will tell you where the nearest authorised Nikon Dealer is (and you won't get ripped off at these shops, I can vouch for that as I have bought all my lenses, flash guns, camera etc from Thailand).
Whatever they quote you, when you go in person, negotiate a further discount! ;)

P.S. They make Nikon cameras in Thailand. ;)

Edit:-

I'm not a Canon man, but their website lists their authorised dealers here.

Having just had a browse of the Canon dealers, I note that they have 2 or 3 authorised dealers at MBK. Nikon have Sunny Camera there as an authorised dealer (I've used them personally). Point I'm trying to make is that MBK which is a large shopping mall houses authorised dealers for both, it is also very convenient to get to using the BTS Skytrain as it is connected by an aerial walkway from the station. The BTS station you need is "Siam Square".

There are a couple of camera shops on the ground floor where you can buy/sell second hand equipment, you'll need to be on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd floors to find the dealers.

ive just got back from my hols to Hongkong - Cairns/sydney & Bangkok

I had a good look round some of the camera shops and Hongkong seemed to be the cheapest and you can barter more off the price

I was in the Mall at Siam less than 2 weeks ago and I didnt see any camera shops , although i did see an electronics shop selling a 350d & 30d and they were pretty much the same price as over here so I stopped looking and went to the Aquarium

The shop i found in Sydney seemed slightly cheaper than the UK but not much, it was quite a large shop though and had a great selection of lenses new & 2nd hand

I didnt find the camera shop in Cairns, but I found a Peter Lic gallery, some of the photos were great, and the prices were into the thousands
