When I was 12/13 I used to play hockey, and I was part of a team called 'colourcoats'. My dad used to take me all over the place for games.. and this particular tournament was in Sheffield.
After one particular game, we were all walking off the court and I started talking openly to my dad about how some of our players were ****, and how we could have won if we'd had a better goal keeper. I remember my dad telling me to shh and watch my mouth etc... but of course I was seemingly oblivious to my own team mates walking around me and spoke my mind. Now at the time I saw nothing wrong with this. I was too young and stupid to realise how bad it was.
After a few minutes when we were sitting down getting changed out of our kit, my dad noticed that some of the other kids were discussing my comments. My dad then said 'I'm off to get a coffee' and left the room. With no adults in the room, they confronted me and I remember one of them actually planted one on my perfect baby face.
It was a few years later when I realised my dad had gone out of the room on purpose. I've never mentioned it to him, and I'm sure he didn't realise it would escalate quite as much as it did, but I thank him for it because it was a lesson I evidently needed to learn.
What small life lessons have you learned the hard way?
