Yes yes, "Its how much you can afford"....

Anyways.... What is the best calculation to work out justifying an upgrade?

Basically as a married man with 2 young children, i identified £800 i could use to upgrade. However, i shuddered at the thought of using that money for a GFX card and a monitor..... Especially when i could use the money to take them to pepper pig world for the 30th time this month.

A friend pointed out, "but mate, look at the cost and divide it by time spent gaming"... True, i thought... But is that the case........................ Maybe?

There are no doubt many mathematicians on this forum, so i'm throwing it out there:

QUESTION: "What % is it worth me upgrading based on my personal info?".

Factors:

Income
Disposable income
Upgrade cost
"Future proofing"
Time spent gaming
Free Time
Family Time
Likely performance increase (1-100)

I'd say:

( Free time - Family time) / (Upgrade cost / disposable income) x Time spent gaming =

Maybe make it a % of work the upgrade or something?

get a console then job done ;)

Pooley lets not take this lightly my friend... This formula could change the world.... CHANGE THE WORLD I TELL YA!

I'm patenting this as:

Thegoon's Target Score (T.T.S).

Just think about it..... You go to upgrade, do your research have 2 or 3 options. You simply use T.T.S and gives you a USP to each! Tell you OCUK need to jump on this, hell i'd even use the formula on the front page!

Naturally single guys/girls on decent income will have a super high % suitability.... Where as guys/girl in families will vary!

You know that's not appropriate. I've edited it, rather than delete the whole thing - EVH

if you get your enjoyment from it just get it.

I generally only upgrade when my current kit is struggling to do what I want it to do, as a natural result of this I don't upgrade often (went from 1366 socket to Haswell) and that in turn means that every upgrade is a boost in performance since they are so far apart.

As for spending I build the machine that I want but within "reason" as in I generally won't pay £300+ for a video card (he says running 2x 970's O.o at a cost of £500 is total) and I just go from there really. Rough ball park figure is about £1,500 or so but if I can do it for less then that's gravy.
