When I did it originally it was more of a self-control thing. Arguments with VIRII dont tend to go anywhere - he either browbeats you with pointless trivialities, or changes the goalposts. I dont think its possible to have any kind of reasoned debate unless all parties go into it being prepared to have their views changed, as opposed to entering debates with the sole purpose of convincing others that you're right and they are wrong. I realised I was spending too much time goping round in circles, so the ignore function was a useful aide memoire to simply not respond.

I can still ahve constructive, useful debates with folk like dirtydog and cbs, who's opinions are vastly different to mine. The difference is I dont have to have those debates in an atmosphere of uncontrolled agression. Its nice.

I dont know this for certain, obviously, but I think its certainly worthy of consideration.
