Let's all learn what an acronym is

Things like PLC, HTML, MP are not acronyms, they are just abbreviations. You could not speak them aloud as full words: you have to spell out their individual letters.

Now stop getting it wrong.

You mean they are initialisms?

I could say memo fine, which is an abbreviation for memorandum.

I only actually realized my mistake in saying "pin number" at work after being there a couple of weeks. Felt a fool :o

BES (Blackberry Enterprise Server) is my pet hate for this.

'Can you please reboot the BES Server?'

'You're a plank, aren’t you?'

No, because Blackberry Enterprise Server is software running on the hardware, which is also referred to as a server... so you could restart the BES - which personally I would take to close down the software, restart the services and then load the software; or you could reboot the hardware... which would be rebooting the BES Server!

:p

I agree, saying BES server is fine.

Agreed.

Or, as I was going to write, let's all learn what a sodding acronym is.

I see people get this wrong time and time again.

An acronym is an abbreviation, the letters of which stand for other words.

Examples:

Laser - Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation

Radar - Radio Detection and Ranging

Sonar - Sound Navigation and Ranging

RAID - Redundant Array of Independent Disks

Acronyms are all words which you can speak phonetically and which fit into a sentence like, "oh look, a blue laser" or "gosh, I do find RAID arrays fascinating."

Things like PLC, HTML, MP are not acronyms, they are just abbreviations. You could not speak them aloud as full words: you have to spell out their individual letters.

Now stop getting it wrong.
