So since it appears people love nothing more than a good old debate on what is the best console lets debate the mid 90's!

I had the Saturn, PlayStation and N64. I would say that the PlayStation is top dog out of the 3 closely followed by the N64. Some classics like Gran Turismo, Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy 7, Tekken 2 edges it for me. Plus don't get me started on demo discs. Official PlayStation magazine was bettet for this reason alone! Loved a demo disc!

Saturn was a shame, some great games on there such as nights but the hardware really held it back early on.

N64 should have never went with cartridges to be honest. Mario 64 and Zelda were awesome though along with those WCW vs NWO games!

Ahhh running out of time on this commute.....

I must admit I only got a Saturn many years later and thoroughly enjoyed it.
PSX and N64 a very tight battle imho with PSX coming out just on top due to the amount of AAA titles that were released and the controller, really didnt get on with the N64 pad.

You did miss out the jaguar, but at the time I dont remember it being as mainstream as any of the other systems. I greatly enjoyed Theme Park and AvP on the Jag tho, by far one of the best alien games to date imho.

You seem against cartridges, I see it as a plus point for the N64 really, load times :)
I think the way they later added extra functionality and power to the N64 with the memory pack addon was a clever addition, obviously left the expansion possibilities a little open should it be needed in the future, and whilst only for a small amount of the actual games it seemed to pay off.

Price was a downside tho, I'm pretty sure conkers bad fur bady had a 59.99 RRP :eek:
 
PSX and Dreamcast (just 90s) here.

Phantasy Star Online was so ahead of it's time on Dreamcast, ran up many a phone bill on it. Crazy Taxi et al were awecome, shame it was Sega's hardware swansong.

God, some of the demos I got were played more than some games I owned. Had the demo for GTA. Good times.
 
It was all about SNES before the PlayStation finally arrived. Then it was all over IMO. Going from Mario kart, street fighter turbo , pilot wings, Mario etc to wipeout, tekken, GT , and crash was some of my best times as a young gamer.

Duakshock controllers came along when GT was released. Game changer.
 
"Let's start a ... console war"...? While it's fine to go back in time and enjoy some nostalgia, being this childish (which is what console wars are) is perhaps taking it a bit too far. As long as there's no being mean and you play fair, it's all in good fun though.

In all honesty, I tried out the PS1 and the Gameboy Colour back then (can't remember many others), neither were any interesting to little-kid me. I didn't realise video games were a thing till the GameCube. So from my perspective, they all failed as they couldn't garner the interest of a simple child.
 
Ooooh sweet PSX how I loved you. I remember the GTA demo, you only used to get 5 mins playtime and I played the heck out of it. Some great memories of playing titles such as THPS, GTA, Hercules, Pandemonium, Abes Odyssey, Crash Bandicoot, Worms and so many more!

Tbis totally this. And then when the 90s finished the ps2 just carried on , good times.

And yes j remember demo discs from magazines. And those black CDs from the first PlayStation and 1mb memory cards.those were the days.
 
Playstation all day for me. The N64 was good for Goldeneye but the PS had so many great demo/games.

Played the literal hell out of the Die Hard Trilogy.
 
If we're talking mid 90s, there's no contest. N64 all the way. We were lucky enough to have a Playstation in the house too. It had some great games for sure and a wider breadth of quality titles. But if we're talking stone cold classics - games that defined genres and are still rated today as truly great - the N64 eclipsed the Playstation and then some.
 
Definitely Playstation, games were amazing and you could chip them too!

Memories of running the PS1 with the lid up and a brio shoved in to trick it to thinking it was closed and hot-swapping disc's after they'd authenticated :D
 
I only had a PlayStation, I remember getting it on Christmas morning with GTA, I was probably only about 15 at the time (thanks Mum :)) and I played it all day. One of my best friends had an N64 and the other had a Saturn so we had all bases covered.

Is this the one that had Destruction Derby on it? I played that demo SO much. I really should have asked for the full game.
 
Can't believe no ones mentioned the Sega 32x, great for the arcade hits of the time Star Wars , Virtua Racing and Virtua Fighter. Dog of a system though.

Had all others too saturn, mega drive, PSX my brother had the Snes, N64 etc.

Having owned previous Sega consoles I had my eye on the Saturn before it came out. But after talking to the owner of the local game shop, he persuaded me to get the PlayStation.

Can't thank him enough, great console, great games and the Official PlayStation Magazine subscriptions I had for years was a monthly treat I really looked forward to.

Hooking up two consoles and a couple of TV's to play TOCA against my brother was a fantastic experience. I remember playing Final Fantasy VII for most of the Christmas holiday one year. The wife weren't happy with me at all.

We did get an N64 for the kids so I played that too, but only really Mario 64.
 
PlayStation. Paved the way IMO and was followed well by the Playstaion 2. Started to lose its way after that for me.

No love for the VirtualBoy? :p
