We want to move out of London. Cue lots of exploring within commuting distance, and Maidenhead looks pretty decent, and considerably more affordable than London (I can get a 4 bed, 2 bathroom semi for the price of our 2 bedroom flat!).

What's it like? Anyone live there? Tips? Comments?

Cheerio :)

Can't comment on what's it like to live there, but passing through wasnt inspiring and colleagues who have lived there cordially called it a crap version of Slough.

Can you afford somewhere like St Alban's?

Used to live in White Waltham which was fairly nice. Worked in Maidenhead for a bit and the town itself is fairly standard new town style chav ville.

Maidenhead is much, MUCH nicer than Slough, but it's a typical town basically. Good/fast links to Paddington, but have you considered one of the smaller villages on that line which will be getting Crossrail soon (Twyford/Taplow/Burnham etc)? Where do you work and what are you looking for in a place to live?

I work in Chelsea, wife works in Hammersmith. We drive in together so train links aren't that important, however the Hammersmith Flyover is, so we'll be compromising on that one. As for what we want, just a decent respectable area to live in, quieter than London but not completely dead, a bit of scenery other than architecture, decent to look at, etc.

Oh and as far away from any council estates as possible. London's full of them and they are all hives for scum.

If you're driving and want to live in that area you're spoilt for choice really. Apart from the villages I mentioned on the arterial train line, you also have places like Marlow or Windsor (or Eton) which are really nice. Staines isn't a bad shout, especially for Hammersmith and Chelsea which are just up the A30/A4 (although I've not driven that route in rush hour for years so it may be a nightmare now), there are some quite nice parts of it and you're on the river.

If you're planning on buying, Maidenhead or anywhere along the GWR line would be my bet though, with Crossrail arriving.

Town centre isn't much to shout about but then I very rarely go into it.
Due to be a lot of work on the centre starting soon.

To live in it is OK, like anywhere some areas better than others.

I lived in Holyport for a few years when I ran my hosting company. Living a mile from the DC was handy ha. Miss the village and surrounding countryside lots. The George on the green was a brilliant local.

Maidenhead is alright, it's neither notably flashy nor trashy, far far worse places to live. It's got a decent gym, cinema and Sainsbury's, and these days it has a decent pub or two as well.

Windsor is the best nearby town and being from Bath I'm already immune to tourists so didn't notice them much. Pretty cool to hang out on the long walk and see the Queen pop out for lunch in her Range too. Actually I think it was Philip driving, should count myself lucky I'm still alive

Slough, avoid...Burnham and Taplow though are worth looking at.

Edit: And if you want to buy my house....yours for 895 sir which I promise is a fair price. Honest. Bargain for you London lot ;)

If you drive into work then the surrounding areas of Maidenhead are far, far nicer then Maidenhead itself. Cookham is one, but I don't know what house prices are like. Marlow, Bray etc. I dunno.

You can get that price for a house in zone 3

Just moved from Tottenham to Coulsdon, hell of a step change! There is still a phase being built on the development (if you entertain the idea of a new build).

Look out a bit further. Reading or Twyford.

The problem with Reading is that it doesn’t have any nice parts unlike Maidenhead. Caversham’s nice if you’re on the side that follows the Oxford road after the bridge.

The problem with Maidenhead is that the town centre is small and pretty basic, so you will be driving to go shopping or eating out. Oh, and parts of it are still likely to flood at some point, but then so is the entire area near the Thames.
