Lets talk Starlancer

Ahhh, those were the days.

I originally upgraded from my Amiga to a PC for those space combat games.

Used to go visiting a mate so I could play the Wing Commander games on his 386/486.. the Amiga version of Wing Commander 2 wasn't really up to much ;) Even had the AGA version on my CD32, but ran too slow.

I remember when Wing Commander Prophecy came out, and I ran it on my Voodoo2... WOOOOOW!

Starlancer, Freespace 2, both exactly my cup of tea... Freelancer to a lesser extent, but still good fun.

I really miss those games, and often wish another Wing Commander game would be made.

Saying that, I wasn't really a fan of first person shooters back then either... played them a bit, but then Quake II came out. I had an ATI Xpert@play at the time, which was, frankly, carp... got an OpenGL patch to use with QuakeII... until I got my Voodoo2 card, then I was hooked, completed it and started it again ;)

So, to 2007, FPS still going strong, can't wait for Crysis, just wish Wing Commander could make a comeback!

I remember a wing commander game on spectrum i think once where i thought it was cool with the moving joystick in the cockpit lol. I have prophecy gold and it runs a bit too fast when in space on my comp so i didnt play it much but thought was mint with cutscenes with biff from back to the future and i think luke from starwars.

mmm, Starlancer. Good game that one and i think it was one of the first i played online, good fun (even on a sucky modem).

I'm sure i finished it but can't for the life of me remember what happens, last thing i can think of is attacking some super-carrier, or maybe just a big ship of the line but one packing a 'special nasty' weapon?
IIRC there was some branching in the sotryline although it didn't effect the outcome it could change your next mission or two.

Especially loved the way the fleets were split up, defending the Japanese fleet / Yamamoto from torrent of torp bombers was a right pain in the backside but quite cool and generally well done (or as well done as 'protect' missions can be)

I think the last mission for starlancer had you attacking a space station that had some sort of particle cannon i remember having to use the stealth ship to finish it.

Ahh good times, i tried it so many times with the other ships but the stealth is so much easier...stealth in, then run and gun.

Now you lot have got me wanting to boot up my DC and play it again.

Anyone know if there's a mod to play this with a mouse? That's the only thing which puts me off playing Starlancer and I-War2, the lack of mouse flying. I love Freespace 2, Darkstar One and Freelancer.

Funnily enough, that was the thing that I didn't like about Freelancer.
The controls.

I used to play Wing Commander/Starlancer/Freespace2 with a great big Microsoft Sidewinder ForceFeedback joystick.

Mind you, when XP came out, it didn't support it properly, and very few games supported the force feedback, one of the Colin McRae's being one I remember. Was hellish at the time, it cost me about £140 at the time, and I had it for a year, it was a Microsoft Joystick, and Microsoft never did a proper XP driver for it!

Still, now I'm on Vista, I don't have the joystick any more, so if I were to go back and play it, I guess I'd want to use the mouse too.... as I wouldn't want to play it with a keyboard. Those games were truely great with that Sidewinder joystick though!

Happy Days! ;)
