Friday I posted a letter (Special Delivery by 1pm) and was hoping it would be delivered on Saturday; however, it hasn't been. It now appears to be at one of Royal Mail's mail centres and stuck on "Ready for delivery." "Your item was received by the mail centre and is now due for delivery today", which of course it won't be as it is now Sunday. If I click on "Update delivery options," it says that no options are available.

As @dave28 says next day by 1pm, you have to pay more for guaranteed Saturday delivery.
It could also be the system being funky. I received something and the tracking said something similar even though I had it in hand.

Hmm, it could be. I will find out on Tuesday I guess. It looks like something is amiss somewhere, as the tracking information hasn't updated. Unless the information doesn't automatically update unless the items are scanned again, I would have thought the "Update delivery options" would be working though, unless of course it has been delivered.

Did you pay extra for Saturday delivery?
If not then there's no guarantee that it would have been delivered yesterday.
While we're on the subject of moaning about Royal Mail, I recently bought something from Ebay which had RM tracking. It didn't turn up when I expected it so I tracked it via the website, it said it had been delivered a couple of days earlier. So I wrote it off as lost and bought the same item again from Ebay which turned up as expected. Then a few days later I get the first item I ordered in the mail 
Royal mail have been delivering special deliveries on a sunday in my area.
But officially unless you paid extra for the Saturday Guarantee, it not late if it gets there next working day - tuesday in this case

I had an issue with Royal Fail last weekend, was delivering a parcel, I saw the guy pull up in a van walk across the road, turn back jumped in his van and drove off. Cue up the imminent text saying we attempted delivery but no-one was in. Was a proper WTF moment as my doorbell camera literally filmed him not bothering to attempt delivery. But alas no-one in Royal Fail to complain to / send video footage.

Royal Mail is a total mess at the moment.
Posted 1st class signed for letter on 16th May, along with a number of other first class letters, none of which have yet arrived.
It's a total joke, to the point I am now considering even sending just envelopes via Hermes etc.
