I'm looking for a little reassurance here, though I'm afraid that I might not like the response I get!

My Canon Pixma IP5000 printer was brilliant for the first 2 years, then I got major banding issues and blue streaks across photos... I think the print head is dead. After putting up with it for a couple of years and instead relying on getting photos done by, e.g., Snapfish, I've decided it's time to get a new one.

My scanner doesn't play with Win 7, so I decided to get a all-in-one. Uses will be printing an even mix of b&w prints, colour prints, photos up to A4 and scanning documents like statements, etc (i.e. archiving those documents that end up in a filing cabinet).

My initial target if interest was the Canon MP560... unfortunately I missed the boat when they were selling <£100 a few months back. So I'm looking at the £90-125 price range.

While browsing for options I picked on the half-price deal Lexmark have this month on the Interact S605 and Prestige Pro805, which both use the new touchscreen interfaces. Traditionally I wouldn't touch Lexmark with a bargepole, but the reviews are fairly good (though mixed), and DigitalVersus currently rate the S605 as their top all-in-one. Subsequently, I've bought a Prestige over the Interact... decision influenced by: supplied with XL tanks, can take the XL105 black ink tank (<£5), document feeder and 5 year warranty (which includes the print heads... won' get burnt like with my Canon).

However, I still have a funny feeling about getting a Lexmark. What do you lot think? Anyone have experience of the new Lexmark range?

When i had a lexmark the inkcartridges used to have the print head on the bottom so tended to cost a fortune because of that.

I believe that has changed in the latest range, as has the move to 4 separate cartridges for yellow, magenta, cyan and black.

I don't know how the cartridges compare to most for price... the XL ones are apparently good for 600 pages (I assume ISO pages) and cost approx £4 for the black and £11 for each of the colours. I haven't found any compatible inks for these models.

Digital Versus lists the following:

ISO Text Document: Text

Cartridge--------Price (Dec 09)-----ISO Lifespan-----Cost per page
105XL (black)-------£4.07------------510---------------0.8 p
100XL (cyan)-------£14.58-----------600---------------2.4 p
100XL (magenta)---£14.58-----------600----------------2.4 p
100XL (yellow)-----£14.58------------600---------------2.4 p

That's a total cost per page of 8 p.

How does this compare with others?

The printer hasn't arrived yet, so I still have the option of changing my mind.

Lexmark... why on earth do they make ink jets?

HP PSC? Good range of inks at a nice price.

Epson RX range.

It's still sitting on the floor looking lonely. I was waiting on some sample prints from Lexmark to help me decide, but they emailed today to say that they don't have any (!).

I'm also thinking about the cost of ink more... after looking at prices, I think that this model is comparable to other makes when considering original ink, but I haven't found any compatible ink cartridges. That said, I wonder if using 'compatible' ink contributed to the death of the print head in my Canon?

Typical me, I'm being indecisive. Bottom line, my only conern is whether I will be happy with photo output, as all other aspects seem positive on paper and from reviews: under close scrutiny, a Canon may produce slightly better photos (and die earlier), but if you see a photo from the Lexmark standing on its own, would you think good photo or bad photo.

I use compatible ink cartridge's with my Canon ip4300, have done a hell of a lot of printing A4photo's, etc, in the two and a half year's l've had it and is still going strong.

Buy another Canon ip > compatible cartridge's full set about £15 or cheaper > Canon cartridge's full set about £50 = you save about £35. The money you save pay's for the printer it's a no brainer.

Lexmark cheap printer, cartridge's highway robbery.
