Bad year of manufacture to be buying an E class. If you must get a 320 not a 270. At least you will have a bit of performance between breakdowns

I'm aware that they have a bad reputation, but I think its exaggerated, a combination of high expectations and internet hearsay. Reliability index gives it as ~90 (120 is average, lower is better) for reliability with £400 average repair bill

Go for it mate, i can only tell you our experience with e class's from 52 plate to 54 when we gave them out as company cars and it was dire.

We had 3 gearboxes changed in 12 cars along with numerous electrical problems.

My stepmother had a brand new IS220d in 08, in a line of crappy exec cars it was the worst.

An S type Jag probably, or if it had to be a Merc spend a bit more and get something from 2006 onwards.

I say a S Type not because they never go wrong, but pound for pound you get a 2005 car with half the miles of an equivalent Merc, with arguably the best sub 3 litre diesel engine out there.

I remember my dad's colleagues having lots of electrical problems with E Classes around that time.

I've also read that the pre-facelift ones are to be avoided.
