As title says, i am looking for a gigabit switch to replace my hub as i rescently started streaming video over the network and it is fast becoming a choke point when the other pc's are busy on the network.
Minimum ports are 6, the main issue is that it needs to be quiet (why i chose a hub in the first place)
All the devices bar the 360 (which is 10/100) are gigabit enabled and i have cat5e/6 already in place when i did the wiring (newer links cat 6, older ones mostly the ones going through floors are cat 5e)

I dont need anything fancy such as vlan's, firewalls and such which you get on a cisco

My current setup:

Red: used for video streaming+high bandwidth apps
Black: normal use
Lightning: wireless

Thanks in advance

I recently got a netgear Gb switch for £40. They are cheap enough now, although that was the 5 port version. 3com and Dlink do one similar, this is the one step above the plastic home grade stuff.

Personally I like the netgear's there cheap, solid (metal case so it will take some abuse) and work ok...

Doesn't sound like you need much over a basic Gb connection anyway tbh.

I've got the little Netgear GS605 (5 port) which works well so I'd expect the GS608 will as well. However, it has a plastic case and does run quite hot when working so the advice given to get the metal-cased version is worth taking.

main thing for me is it needs to be quiet, i am really anal when it comes to noise as i cant sleep if anything is on in my room (example my htpc is barely audible but when it is dead at night i cant sleep because of the hum)

The netgear GS1xx series is better than the GS6xx series, I have got both and the GS108 is metal and much less fiddly to connect eight cable into.

i didnt think any routers/switches use fans, except for the maybe the bigger ones designed for office envrioments, all the home ones should be compleatly silent.
