Hi!

I'm looking for a nice 27" monitor and I'm currently eyeballing the LG 27MP77HM-P. Seems to be decent spec with good response time and looks quite the part on top of that. I know most image clarity purists will probably say that I should shoot for a higher res at that sort of size but I'm not exactly sitting with my nose in the screen and I reckon I'll be perfectly happy with 27" 1080p 60hz. I'll move straight to 4k when it becomes a viable option.

Basically, all I want is a good, eye-friendly, general purpose monitor for gaming/writing stuff/music production with decent colour reproduction and good viewing angles. I don't need 1ms response time or 120hz as I hardly ever play competitive FPS games.

Do you think the monitor in question would be a decent choice? Or perhaps there are better options out there?

Initially, I planned to buy a Sony KDL-40W705C 40" TV, pop it on the wall and just sit farther back from the screen but I'm not sure whether it'll be comfortable for writing in Word.

LG Flatron E2281 21,5" 1080p.

I'm actually tempted to get this one: https://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MO-127-LG&groupid=17&catid=2898

I don't know how my 970 will cope with 1440p, though. Also, I'm quite worried about the font size. I had to increase font size on my current monitor as it was a bit too small and I really like to sit a bit farther away from the screen.

That LG looks great, and it's not 4k which is a definite advantage for me.

This bloke says that the text is almost unreadable:

I don't know hot that's supposed to work;p

1080p @ 27" will (IMO) be a massive drop in quality over 1080p @ 21.5"

Same number of pixels in almost 60% more area, so you'll be sacrificing sharpness for size (http://www.displaywars.com/21,5-inch-16x9-vs-27-inch-16x9)

However if you sit far back it won't be such a big deal.

That 34" will be the same height (and pixel size) as a 27" 1080p

Your 970 will be fine with 1440p - I have a 970 and I'm running a 34" 3440x1440 with no issues

Thanks for the input:)

So is this 34" LG actually a viable choice at 2560x1080?

I'm no bothered about seeing individual pixels as I sure as hell won't be sitting 30 cm from the screen;p

Some sources (including Guru3d) quote the response time of this monitor as 14ms (!), whereas LG's official site states 5ms but there's 14ms written just under it;p What the hell?

The thing I'm worried about most is text quality. LinusTechTips also brings this up as an issue (calling it "abominable;p). TBH, I just can't believe it's that bad.

There is one monitor that would probably be perfect for what I have in mind and it's this one: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MO-099-BQ

However, I don't know how well it fares for gaming and I haven't had any experience with BenQ products.

The size and the res seem perfect for working/gaming from a bit farther away (or even mounting it on a wall). I wish there were more 30" 1440p monitors, it would make things a lot easier since I need a fairly big screen with a resolution sharp enough for comfortable reading/writing but without making the text too small to read from a reasonable distance.

I would imagine the text quality issue is possibly to do with the lack of sharpness due to the resolution/size. Not an issue if you're sat a couple of m away, but if you're sat at a desk with it you may notice. You could try popping into a well known high Street store to take a look at a 27" 1080p and see what you think of it?

Actually, I've seen my mate's 27" 1080p Samsung in action and it looked very good. I've noticed some loss of sharpness but it wasn't anything terrible.

I'd be chuffed to bits with a 30-32" 1440p screen, it's a shame there aren't any besides the BenQ and the Philips BDM3270QP which I know nothing about.
