LG have confirmed that Overclockers will be stocking the 38WN95C from 15th June. I'm quite keen on preordering this and reckon it'll be popular. Can anyone tell me when preorders would usually go up for such an item?

Looks like the holy grail for me:
  • thunderbolt with power delivery
  • 144Hz
  • Freesync / G-sync compatible
  • 1ms response (likely worse in reality given LG's other monitors)
  • HDR 600
  • Actually looks nice, no gamer aesthetic.

Nice - Are people going with this model to avoid the fans in the Gsync version? or are there other features worth knowing about?

As far as I'm aware it should be just a 38GN950 panel but marketed more towards professionals, so a perfect "do it all" for me. Thunderbolt 3 is a big plus. Moreover the aesthetic is more relaxed. There's a post on Reddit that describes the differences pretty well, here's a quote:

38GL950-B: Ultragear series 144hz (175 max O.C) G-sync Module (with fan), HDR400, Sphere Lighting 2.0 - Out Now for $1799

Refresh:

38GN950: Ultragear series, 144hz (160 max O.C.) G-sync compatible (No module presumably atm), HDR600, Sphere Lighting 2.0 - No release Date/Price (Rumored Q2'20)

38WN95C: Ultrawide series, 144hz (no O.C.) HDR600, g-sync compatible, Thunderbolt-3, No Sphere Lighting. No release Date/Price (Rumored Q2'20)

The price is also pretty good when you get rid of the Gsync module and RGB lighting etc. £1349.99 compared to £1699.99.

Ah thats helpful thanks.

I am sitting here with a GL950G and the coil/transistor whine is really annoying. Unfortunately I am one of those guys who can hear coil whine above everything else, whether its from a PSU, GPU or whatever.

This panel is going back, so I am just investigating alternatives. Do you know if either the GN or the WN have picture in picture modes? i.e. have two different inputs displayed on the same screen side by side?

I'm pretty sure the 38WN95C has PBP as it's listed on the LG product page, so should be able to display two inputs side by side. Not sure about the GN, the product specs on LG's site don't mention it.

By the way, do the new LG 38's utilise DSC to allow for 10bit operation at 144Hz? It would seem like a massive oversight if they didn't, given how the 4K panel supposedly uses it.

I haven't seen it included in any spec lists for the monitor unfortunately. It will be a bit of a shame if they don't include it though. However realistically I'm not sure I'll notice the difference between 8 bit and 10 bit, especially as the 10 bit is 8 bit + FRC.

Exactly! The perfect do it all for a setup where I work from home during the day and then play games at night. It also supports the 144hz over thunderbolt, so you get the 144hz for both game and work. Should be pretty nice.

Nice! I wish Overclockers pricing was competitive on this one but unfortunately not.

I've just seen that the 38GN950 is now available on Overclockers for preorder. I wonder why it's £150 more than the 38WN95C.

I do wonder whether 10 bit 4:4:4 144hz is possible over the Thunderbolt 3 connection due to the higher bandwidth, even if the displayport can't achieve it.

I don't know of any GPUs that can output via thunderbolt 3 though. I do wonder whether we might see a displayport 2.0 -> thunderbolt 3 adapter in the future to make the most of it.

Yeh seems like OcUK got them a lot sooner than other places. I just had my ordered placed elsewhere delayed to 8th July. Think I would have snapped one up off OcUK but their dead pixel policy is getting to me.

I was unfortunately one of the ones that got a bad unit so had to send it back. In my case it had more than one issue.

Firstly, the stand had a massive seam line going right up it where they joined the pieces of plastic together. It completely ruined the brushed metal look.
Secondly, the panel suffered from the same panel peel issue others had. This was most notable in the corners, but it catches the light really easily around the entire edge of the panel. So whenever you move your head you kinda see a shimmering as the light catches the edges.
Lastly, I had a stuck green pixel right in the middle of the screen. I could have lived with the other two issues (I plan to mount it anyways), but the stuck pixel is a big no-no for me.

Sent it back with no option for a replacement, even though I got it for the great price of £1099. I'm waiting on an order elsewhere now to be able to try my luck again, but with an Oct 14th delivery date and at £1209! Fantastic do it all monitor otherwise.

I thought OC did not have a return policy for dead pixels lower than the standard (I think it's bout 16 for this resolution).

Yeh this is why I was hesitant buying it from here. If I had to keep a monitor that had the green stuck pixel near the centre of the screen I'd go mad! It was way too noticeable. Although I think you can return it to OC within 14 days for any reason due to buying it online, and this allows in law for opening the box to check the item.

I got lucky with the cheap prices. I won't mention their names but the initial preorder price that two other retailers had were very cheap. One for £1099 and another for £1209 (I preordered it on both sites, because the first site doesn't take payment until it ships). Thought it was a misprice but it actually got delivered. Their prices have since gone up and normalized with what OC are pricing it at, if not higher, but I held on to the 2nd preorder at £1209, it'll just be a loooong wait until October!
