LG C2 pass through issues

Hi All,

I wonder if anyone has any thoughts about this issue (before I potentially just give up). I have a LG C2 (42 inch), which I use a PC ‘monitor’. My set up is PC GPU (via 2.1 HDMI) to HDMI 1 of the LG C2 and then a HDMI cable from HDMI 2 (eARC port) from the LG C2 to my AVR’s (Denon X1800H) eARC port.

I am no longer getting Dolby Atmos or Dolby Digital when I play video files. I know these videos have these sound formats and I was getting Dolby Atmos or Dolby Digital before. I have changed nothing on the LG C2’s settings that I am aware of. The crazy thing is that if a play a PC game that I know has Dolby Atmos (eg Baldur’s Gate 3) then the AVR plays the game as being in Dolby Atmos (shows it on the AVR screen). Therefore, the problem seems to be video files only!

I would also confirm the following:

  • All my settings in video players on my PC (Media Player Classic, VLC etc) are all ok and to confirm this I changed my set up to GPU - AVR – TV (from GPU – TV – AVR via EARC) and I get Dolby Atmos and Dolby Digital shown on the AVR when I play the same video files. However, if I use GPU - AVR – TV I lose AMD Freesync Premium Pro (as the AVR does not pass this through) and possibly also lose Dolby Vision HDR (as I don’t think it passes that through either).

  • The LG C2 is set to - Sound Out: HDMI (ARC) Device, HDMI: Bitstream, Digital Sound Out: Pass Through and eARC Support is switched on. As noted, none of that has been changed, the LG C2 has just stopped passing through Dolby Atmos or Dolby Digital for any video file that supports it!

  • All HDMI cables are rated for Dolby Atmos etc via eARC (as advised it worked before). Not sure how long it’s not been working on video files, as a mainly play games, but it is probably only a few days at most.

  • I have tried a different a HDMI port on the LG C2 (i.e. PC GPU (via 2.1 HDMI) to HDMI 4 of the LG C2 and then a HDMI cable from HDMI 2 (eARC port) from the LG C2 to my AVR’s (Denon X1800H) eARC port. I have then made sure that all the LG C2 sound settings are correct for this HDMI port. I have also tried different HDMI cables. Still nothing.
At present I await delivery of a USB stick so I can update the LG C2 firmware manually (no update is yet shown via the internal software updater) as I am still on firmware 23.25.55 and 33.22.85 is now available. I can only hope that this firmware update will resolve the issue.

However, if anyone has any other idea on how to resolve this, I would be extremely grateful.

Alan

Hi Hornetstinger,

I did note that if I set up as PC - AVR – TV then I do get Dolby Atmos/Digital from the same video files . As such the problem very much seems to be the LG C2. However, as also noted, if I set up that way I lose AMD Freesync Premium Pro (as the AVR does not pass this through) and possibly also lose Dolby Vision HDR (as I don’t think it passes that through either).

I can only assume that the firmware is not yet updating via Wi-Fi is it's being rolled out by LG and it's just not 'my turn' to get it yet.

Google is suggesting that this firmware update fixes some stuff with eARC, so it might worth a shot.

Update:

I have for many days and with much much trial and error (and much pulling my hair out) followed helpful posts from all over the web to try and rectify this problem.

I tried everything and nothing would work. I was left thinking the problem must lie with a hardware issue with the LG C2.

In the end though the solution was unbelievably simple (and I'm annoyed at myself for not at least trying it before now). To be fair I had not seen this solution suggested generally and it was a random post I noticed whilst searching online for more suggestions.

What I did was ticked on both options in Exclusive Mode in the Windows sound properties. All sound seems to be working correctly now (long may it continue) and my AVR is showing Atmos (and Dolby Digital (+) with applicable files) when I play in Atmos video files, rather than just Multi In (PCM). The speakers are also correctly firing i.e. the left and right height speakers in a Dolby Atmos sound test (5-1-2).

To be fair I have never touched Exclusive Mode, so Atmos/Dolby Digital must have previously worked correctly with these options both 'unticked'. Why they now need to be ticked I do not know. I suppose it's possible that they were ticked and some software or Windows Update has 'unticked' them without my knowledge? However, when I search online re: Exclusive Mode, most comments seem to suggest that Exclusive Mode should be unticked for Atmos/Dolby Digital to work correctly!

Anyway, I've put it out in case its helps anyone else.

Regards,

Alan
