LG TV fault - is it beyond help?

Hi folks. I have a 5 year old 50 inch LG LCD TV which up until Sunday hadn't missed a beat. Its a 3d model as was popular at the time but is just used for normal tv viewing.

On Sunday I was in the kitchen and my wife said "The TV has gone off", when I came in the screen was black. I tried switching on and off and got the "LG" logo flash up on the screen upon switch on as it usually does but only for a fraction of a second then black screen again. My sound comes through a soundbar which was still working perfectly from the sky box. I swapped the TV out with the one in the spare room and everything was fine again with the spare tv.

On closer inspection of the LG yesterday (didn't have a change to look at it until then) when I switch it on with no inputs I can just about almost see the input menu very faintly on the screen almost like screen burn its that dark (but obviously not screen burn that just by way of illustration).

Essentially does this sound like the panel is knackered? I know less than nothing about the tech side of things other than it was a £700 tv 5 years ago but these things are rarely worth repairing. Before I do anything else I was wondering if it sounded like common "Your telly is screwed" symptoms? My 10 month old child is crawling about now and at first I thought she may have done something but clearly upon inspection that isn't the case.

Any thoughts?

Looks like the backlight is gone.
Put a torch really close to it and check if you can see the rest of the image, if yes, probably the backlight "bulb" is gone or the backlight controller

I would google your specific model ... but if it is power supply for backlight say, then you can usually pick up boards for ~£20,
and then install yourself, which does need some diy'ing+appropriate tools - learning experience ? , or,
maybe you can find someoe who can install it , but rapidly uneconomic if the problem is more complex than a single board.
