I have a 43" lg uj634v that developing purple areas. There's one at the top right hand side and it seems another one starting towards the bottom middle. I've googled it and it seems there's no definitive fix except to replace the back light.

Is there anything I can do other than replace the unit. Its only about 4 years old at max. My tesco technika lasted far longer.

Thanks

Replacing the backlight is the fix. The issue is that the individual LEDs are starting to fail. As they do then their ability to produce white light gets screwed up. They go purple.

This is not a problem that can be fixed by pressing buttons. It's not an incorrect setting. Something is actually broken and the fix is to replace all of the backlights because trying to fix individual ones isn't practical and (even if possible) would result in different colour of white in patches on the screen. This would also affect the rest of the colours in each light zone compared to its neighbours too.

The answer is to replace all the backlight. That, or live with it until the backlights all go purple, then junk the TV or just sell the TV now to a repairer, but don't expect to get much for it (<£50) because the repairer then has to spend the dosh on a new backlight system before that can resell, and s/h entry-level repaired TVs don't fetch a fortune when new ones are as cheap as they are.

The reason your Technica lasted longer is partly it was a lower cost set - bet it wasn't 4K - so wasn't aiming as high, and secondly, it didn't have to support the huge cost base of LG so they weren't trying to cut as many corners.

Basic LGs came a cropper because the company was trying to out-do the budget brands. Running the backlights as hard as this just accelerated the wear.

I've got the 49" LG version and it did the same. Replaced the backlights all fine. It looked like I could do it myself but got a local TV repair company to do it in the end. Was about £100 including parts

That's more blue than purple, but it could be that the camera struggles to capture the colour accurately.

It's also very even and the focus is good, almost like the TV is getting just the blue element of an RGB picture. If that's from the TVs own Freeview tuner then it's likely a backlight issue. But if it's an external source then check the video output settings and HDMI cable connection.

Aye that's pretty much what I read online as well. Might price a repair first to see, but need to live with it the short term as I've a holiday in June to pay for first. And I get a 200 quid voucher from work then too which I'll put towards it. Cheers

A full reset won't change either condition. If the LEDs have had it then they'll still look the same. If it's a source setting issue - then source means the external box supplying a signal, then that will still be set wrong.

*** Question for you to answer ***

Can the TV receive Freeview, and if so, does the picture look like that when doing so?

This is your check. This is how you find out if it's a source setting issue or an LED backlight issue. Comprende?
