I would like to get USB 3 and SATA III but my motherboard doesn't support either of these
what would my best option be ?

get another 1366 motherboard that uses sata III and USB 3
or change it completely ?

how much do you want to spend?

there are 2 options - expensive - upgrade MB and CPU to something recent aka 4770K and Z87

or cheap one - get USB 3.0 and SATA3 expansion cards.

What is your storage? If you are on an SSD then SATA3 might be slightly beneficial, but if not I would honestly stick with what you have. If you game and you have cash to burn then I'd get a better GPU.

currently got about 4 SATA II drives and 1 external USB drive

I want to buy a fast SSD drive and probably buy another in the future and RAID 0 them

the graphics card isn't that old, less than a year, and my current setup is fast enough for me

Had a look at these Z87 motherboards and they all seem to have integrated graphics cards?

none of Z87 boards have iGPU. that's built into CPU.

with SSD the only limit on SATA2 is sequential speeds, otherwise you still get all the other benefits.

Worth pointing out that all the X58 boards that have the two features you want also use aftermarket chipsets for SATA3 and USB3, most of which provide awful performance. In some cases Intel SATA2 ports have been faster than the aftermarket SATA3 controllers. So if you want true SATA3 and USB3 speeds you'll need a generation that provides them as part of the chipset. So if you are willing to upgrade just for SATA3 and USB3 then you'll need newer generation (Z77 and above from what I remember), honestly though I wouldn't of thought it was worth it, the i7 940 is still a decent CPU.

thanks guys

there are only 2 CPUs available for the 1155 (i7)
so I cant see any point in getting one of those if its becoming obsolete
don't forget I already have an I7 so I wouldn't get anything less
next up would be the 2011?

Socket 2011 is Socket 1366s successor but is also due to be replaced, rumors say Q3 this year, so you might as well wait it out. Either get the replacement or a cheaper Socket 2011 bundle when someone upgrades.

it all comes down to cash.

if you have a decent amount spare, LGA2011-3 with reasonably priced hexa and octa cores might be the way.

if you just want the SSD, you might as well run it on the current board. USB 3.0 is no big deal.

I would wait to see if any info on LGA 2011s successor, if that comes out soon then LGA 2011 would be a bad choice to upgrade.

I have a 4930k and Rampage 4 extreme sitting in a box, but im still using a 930 and a p6x58d motherboard with a 690. Cba to rip it all out and install the 4930k and R4E. Point im trying to make is that x58 is still powerfull for gaming as long as you have a decent gpu.
