LGA 775 / 775

Not all socket 775 CPUs are compatible with all 775 motherboards (especially out of the box and when talking about dual cores and Core 2 Duo). You need to check the CPU support page on the (motherboard) manufacturers website for the specific motherboard you want to use to be sure.

Anything like that should normally be solved with a BIOS update though. If you tell us the motherboard and CPU, wel should be able to tell you if it will work out of the box :)

Well there are many boards that are incompatable with socket 775 core 2 duo cpus because the voltage regulators are not compatable, and no amount of bios updates will fix that.

Btw, LGA775 and socket 775 are the same thing.

Well I didn't know that- thanks :)

Yes its an absolute nightmare. I don't know too much about it myself, but i gather than there are some boards where an earlier revision won't work with conroe and a newer one will. Quite a minefield.
This makes finding a board for a core 2 duo even more difficult, as its already a bit of a pain because these chips overclock so well then seem to be fsp limited by the board so you have to get a good board.

I really don't know enough about it myself and i would have to ask around here if i was building a core 2 based system.

The new Gigabyte boards are the ones to go for at the moment as they are Conroe ready out of the box.

However, you really need to check whether the boards have a problem with your RAM. I think some of the BIOSs on the boards below Rev. F4 do not supply enough voltage to certain RAM on boot.
