LGA1150 socket CPU

Hi all

My build project has taken a change big time, Was going to go for a Parvum project by all the parts cost a bit more than expected, Now going for a Enthoo Pro M Window Edition, So I know it's a bigger build and I've chose to go for a i5 4690k, i7 4770k or i5 4670k CPU

My question is, Am I right in thinking the 1150 socket is the same as 1151 so any MOBO will fit my chosen processor?

However I've noticed the i7 4770k takes a 2011 socket are they easy to get hold of?

Socket 2011 v3 is for the ennthusiast X series platform, 6 cores and above cpu's. Haswell and devils canyon ie 4770k, 4690k, 4770k and 4790k are the older 1150 mainstream platform. This was replaced in the lineup with socket 1151 which uses the skylake chips. The latter will not fit in a 1151 motherboard, and they also use ddr4 as opposed to ddr3 on haswell.

So if I was to go for one of the above CPU's would I be looking for a 1150 socket MOBO, sorry for noob questions!

Yes, the 4670K, 4690K and 4770K all use LGA1150. If you want to OC, you want to look for either a Z87 or Z97 motherboard.

This is a z97 MOBO and seems to be rated highly would this be ideal?

That's not a bad choice, but for £1 more (at the moment) you can get this:

The Z97 Pro Gamer is tried and tested and is a very good mid-range board. I very highly rate MSI graphics cards, but I've always been slightly hesitant about their motherboards.

They have/had a reputation of issues with BIOS updates - mainly failed updates bricking the board. Bear in mind that if you buy an Asus board from OCUK, you'll get the 3-year turbo RMA service in case anything goes wrong.

All of this information is incorrect.

4XXX series 2 and 4 core CPUs use the 1150 socket. So do 2 and 4 core 5XXX CPUs but good luck finding one. They were only briefly produced.
6XXX CPUs of 2 and 4 cores use the 1151 socket. These are NOT compatible with 1150 socket motherboards.

5XXX CPUs of 6 and 8 cores are for socket 2011v3 as are 6XXX CPUs of 6/8/10 cores. These are enthusiast platform solutions while the 1151 socket and 1150 socket are mainstream.

4XXX CPUs are based on 2013 technology. 4670/4770 are Haswell while 4790 and 4690 are Haswell devil's canyon which features changes to the integrated voltage regulator and thermal interface material between the CPU die and the integrated heat spreader as well as higher stock frequencies. 90 chips were released in 2014 and 70 chips were released in 2013.

If you want a current system you want socket 1151 and a 6XXX CPU, unless you want an enthisiast machine in which case X99 (2011v3) and a 6, 8, or 10 core 6XXX CPU.

Im using this board with a 4690k @ 4.4Ghz and have no complaints.

but if I was building a new system today I would be looking at an 1151 socket board.


Ive also had an i7 4770k in my machine ( belongs to my mate as we were testing components from his build ) I also had it running at 4.4Ghz and ran a few benchmarks to get some heat into it and there wasn't much in the benchmarks between this and my i5.

Thanks for all this information guys, really helpful, I've managed to win a i5 4690k brand new unopened on an auction site for £160.... Now to buy the MOBO will look at the ones recommended
